The Informer Page 5 October 26,1988 New Health Program Popular A new Health program which will produce the only certified personal care attendants in the province attracted well over 100 applicants. Next Monday, 20 students will begin the Personal Care Attendants for the Disabled program. Seven intensive months later, successful graduates will be qualified to assist the disabled of all ages to live independently in the community. Their job prospects are excellent in group homes, health care agencies, private homes and recreation centres. Margot Rawsthorne, Terry Adler, Jann Gibbs, and another new face on campus, Lena Cuthbertson (an occupational therapist and Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association) will share the teaching responsibilities. Students spend 15 weeks in the classroom, then get supervised, on-the-job experience in centres on the North Shore, Vancouver, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, and Squamish. Jann is new on campus, and says already she is comfortable here. "It feels like a family (a large one).” Jann works part-time as coordinator of the program and also coordinates an adult daycare for disabled. She has worked in community psychiatry and as a social worker. For further information about the program, call Jann at 2200. HEALTHSTYLES — WHMIS is coming! October 31, 1988 has been set as a target date for implementing the WHMIS program at Cap. WHMIS is the unwieldy acronym for Workplace Hazardous Materia Information System, a nation- wide program designed to provide employees and employers with information about hazardous materials in the work environment. The three key components are: Labels — applied to products and their containers. The label will alert workers to the hazards of the product and basic safety precautions. Material Safety Data Sheets — will provide more complete information than the label about chemical ingredients, possible health effects, protective measures, and emergency procedures. Education and training programs — Employers will be required to provide a WHMIS education program, which teaches workers safe procedures for the use, storage, and disposal of hazardous products. Watch for news of WHMIS in your department soon. CAPILANO COLLEGE HEALTH SERVICES (2964) Louise Krohn, Pat Buckna Extending themselves You won’t be able to find Louise Krohn in her office in Extension anymore. The coordinator of Extension Programs and Services has moved across the hall to Room A101, where she has assumed new responsibilities (as yet untitled) as the College’s resource person for Canadian Job Strategies programs. Her duties will include developing and coordinating training programs for business and industry, and promoting the College to the business community — all this while continuing with internal coordination and contracts for Extension. Louise has already been in her new office one week and will have half-time staff by next month. She can still be reached at local 2908. Helping te fill the hole she leaves behind will be Pat Buckna, a former Accelerated Computer Systems Management student and worker on the Sportsplex campaign. Pat has already made an impression at Cap: he won the Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal for academic achievement last year, and spent the summer designing the database and working on campaign materials for Sportsplex fundraising. Pat will be responsible for developing and managing all Extension courses and programs. He works on a part-time basis and can be reached at local 2700 or by appointment through Glen at 2910. Before coming to the College, Pat managed cultural programs for the Northwest Territories Pavilion at Expo ’86 and was appointed to the Canada Council Touring Advisory Board. A songwriter and composer, his work has been commissioned by Expo, CBC and others, and he has performed extensively throughout the Arctic and Western Canada. His artistic efforts have twice been supported by the Canada Council, and his administrative talents have been exercised in the past as president of the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre. Presently, he serves on the executive of the Coquitlam Area Fine Arts Council.
