THE INFORMER PAGE 10 MAY 27, 1992 Grateful Student writes... More than 160 bursaries and scholarships provided through the Capilano College Foundation were presented to students at Awards Night on March 19. Shortly afterward, Foundation President Daryl Collier received the following letter. Roland Goetz said he would be happy to have it reprinted in this Informer. Said the Foundation's Executive Director Randi Duke: “We received hundreds of letters like Roland's over the past year and a half. During that time the Foundation members, who are volunteers from the community, have worked hard to increase funds for scholarships and bursaries that allow Capilano College students to pursue their studies.” I want to thank you and the donors you represent for awarding me the George Raven Wood Fund Bursary and the Capilano College Student Trust Award. I was very honored to receive these awards and I can assure you (being a father with dependents) that they are very much appreciated. I’ve spent several years working as an artisan in the construction industry before returning for a higher education last semester. I know how challenging it can be to support oneself, let alone a family, out in the “real world.” I am very aware that there is no such thing as free money, that almost every dollar that passes from one hand to the next has been labored for by someone at some time. For this reason, I look upon scholarships and bursaries not only as rewards for perseverance and hard work, but as investments in the abilities of the recipients. I believe that you and the donors you represent have invested in our potentials so that sometime in the future we can do our parts to help enrich our community and civilization in general. I think it is extremely important to aid those who show the capacity and determination for achieving these higher goals. It raises the consciousness of our society by encouraging and using excellence as a guideline. In the end, only good can come of it. As for myself, I am genuinely determined to live up to these ideals and expectations. As I have said, I was very honored to have been chosen for these awards and I assure each one of you that I will do my utmost to make this investment in my future, in our future, worthy of your judgment and generosity. Again, thank you very much. Until next time... Sincerely, Roland Goetz Recital Bette Cosar : Soprano Lars Kaario : Tenor Gaye Alcock : Piano - Works featured: R. Schumann “Dichterliebe” J.
