Doing research in U.S. Peter Palffy-Muhoray, Physics instructor, is on unpaid leave this term. Palffy, who is among the top researchers in the field of liquid crystals, is working for five months at Kent State University in Ohio, doing research on that topic. He is scheduled to come back to Cap in the fall. Carter receives grant Fitness Leadership instructor Shirley Carter, in cooperation with the Arthritis Society of B.C., was recently awarded a B.C. Health Care Research Foundation Grant for $22,000. With the funding, Carter will deliver a 12 week exercise program for middle aged women suffering from arthritis, and then will study the effects of the program on the participants. The Fitness Leadership Program, naturally, is pleased with Carter's success in getting the grant, and Coordinator Andree Vajda- Janyk notes that further grants for research are being sought by faculty members. New faces in Media In the Media Resources Department, there have been some changes of personnel for the semester. Ken Blaine is not here this term—sharing room B158C are Bill Maylone (who works for the CBC) and Ian Cameron ' (who is with Pentax). Keeping Peter Thompson's chair warm while he's on leave are Dan Power, a graduate of our program and former staffer who also teaches at OLI, and Patrick Ready, who also works at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Meanwhile Bev Reid is back to teach one section of Communications and can be found in the Dynamics Lab, B174. Stork story A/V staffer Robyn Janssens, who is off on maternity leave, would like to thank all union members and the Media staff for their gifts. Robyn had a baby girl, 8 lbs, 6 oz on December 23rd, and has named her Jessica Marianne Albertina. Janssens will be back to work in April. Ceramic work displayed in Japan James Thornsbury, instructor in the Craft department, has had his work accepted in an international exhibition in Japan. The jury for the First International Ceramics Contest 1986, selected 125 entries from 5700 submissions, among which was Thornsbury's "Henry", pictured here.
