Under the enthusiastic leadership of Roy Janzten, an instructor in the Tourism department, and two rafting guides from Canadian Outback Adventures, the intrepid Capilano College folks suited up, paddled down the river for a leisurely float (and one BIG wave that caught them all by surprise), and then enjoyed Roy’s demonstrations of the experiential learning techniques he uses in his program. Along with another trip along the Squamish River, the PD committee has heard that rock climbing could also be on the menu of activities! $30,000 to build a new preschool at the Casa Guatemala orphanage located in the Rio Dulce region of Guatemala. “Tm-glad the students were recognized for their work,” said Cam Sylvester, program director of the Global Stewardship program. “The project was all their idea from start to finish. They asked the orphanage what was needed, raised the money, and paid their own way down. They built the preschool alongside local workers. In the process they learned a lot about themselves and the challenges of putting together an international project like this.” B piano performance September 24 | Photo by Ken Barbour Nancy McMaster In-celebration of the 30" anniversaty of the Music Therapy program at Capilano College, Music Therapy instructor and classical pianist, Nancy McMaster, gave a‘ solo ‘classical to support music therapy in‘B.C. Called Rapt:in Music, the performance was'a celebration of the sweet power of music and music therapy. Approximately 300 people enjoyed the afternoon concert that raised $5,500. “Tt was an outstanding event from start to finish,” said Nancy's Music Therapy colleague, Liz Moffit. “Nancy is a very gifted pianist and she has a unique way of talking about each piece of music before playing it. “People were very moved: by her playing, and by the entire concert,” Liz:added: “Tt was extremely well organized and 50 very generous of Naricy to basically donate ‘her entire summer preparing for this event.” Minister shares Insights B.Cis minister. of transportation and MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, Kevin Falcon; visited: the College on September 26 to make a presentation to Bill Van Luven’s CMNS 170 Public Speaking class. “His talk was extemporary and very candid,” Bill said.“He gave the class excellent insights about giving presentations in clutch (media-storm) circumstances, and explained how he values passion, sincerity and honesty:over slickness or overwritten speeches. “Mr. Falcon'was also surprisingly candid and was extremely forthcoming in his answers to student questions,” Bill added.
