TDHigh Schoo Jazz Intensiv Nineteen students from the Lower Mainland were chosen through a competitive audition process to participate in the 2010 edition of the TD High School Jazz Intensive residency. This nine-day residency program gives students a chance to learn from some of the best musicians in the world. Jazz visionary and creative flutist, composer, bandleader, and educator Nicole Mitchell returned this year as resident artist and conductor to lead the band. "I really think the students of the TD High School Jazz Intensive are top line and have an incredible attitude towards learning. What makes the Jazz Intensive special to me is that these young people are very passionate about music and are open minded to face new musical challenges. The sky is the limit with what they can do!" says Mitchell. Attending three-hour daily rehearsals, workshops, and nightly concerts shaped a very busy, but extremely rewarding, residency for the students. Nicole Mitchell explains, "Most jazz education programs throughout the world tend to limit the student's exposure to only bebop and swing. Unique to those other programs, the Jazz CHELSEA MCBRIDE Intensive has offered students an opportunity to experience the broad diversity of the jazz legacy: bebop, swing, ragtime, avant-garde, latin rhythms, creative music and much more! That is so important to me. This exposure will prepare these musicians, because when they go out into the professional world, they'll be truly able to go in whatever stylistic direction of jazz that they like." On Sunday,July 4th, the band celebrated the entire legacy of jazz music including RORY HISLOP pieces by Count Basie, Maria Schneider, Duke Ellington, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Anthony Braxton, and a chart by student composition contest winner Jonathan Tobin, in Festival Hall at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
