CAPILANO COLLEGE LYNNMOUR PHASE ONE -- INFORMATION SHEET Issued November 23, 1972 in connection with Sod Turning A. ON ACQUISITION OF SITE The College has been looking for a site or sites for almost three years. Earlier demographic and geographic surveys had shown that the Capilano River area would have certain advantages for a central campus. However, the absence of enough accessible and/or available land in this area and in other parts of West Vancouver or North Vancouver City put the College into negotiations with North Vancouver District for land in central North Vancouver. What is now called the Lynnmour area had been suggested to us by the District Council and through negotiations last year a 34 acre parcel was designated for potential College use, On application by the College this land was re-zoned from residential to public assembly in August of this year and an agreement was finalized this month for the College to lease the southern 11 acres of this parcel with an option on the remainder, The College lacks capital money at this time to purchase the land outright. B, THE PHASE ONE LYNNMOUR FACILITY Commensurate with negotiations for the re-zoning and land lease, the College was planning a first phase of construction for the Lynnmour land, With the approval of the three supporting school boards, an application was made to the g,overnment for $1.45 million for this phase one project. This was reduced by the government to $1.09 million as per the order-in-council of June this year, This meant a sizeable reduction of square footage in the planned construction, The final floor plan provides for an area of over 33,000 square feet of new construction, And, as planned from the beginning, an additional 17,000 square feet will be provided by moving to Lynnmour our ten existing relocateable wooden buildings, The new construction is to be of steel-frame concrete slab, with pre-cast cement on outside walls, All inside walls will be of a moveable nature so as to provide maximum flexibility in use or reuse of areas. 2 The breakdown of the main spaces in the total 50,000 square feet of facilities is rughly: 9,500 square feet for general teaching areas, 5,500 square feet for a Media, 5,000 square feet for Science labs, 5,000 square feet for divisional faculty offices and student resources learning and study space, 5,000 square feet for a cafetheatre, 3,500 square feet for the Media Resources Program and College graphics area, 3,000 square feet for Business and Secretarial programs teaching space, and 1,000 square feet for the Student Services Centre, The Phase One, 11 acre site development is planned on a basis that will leave untouched as much as possible of the natural growth, while the partially cleared areas around the buildings and the fringes of the open areas will be planted with a wide variety of interesting plants to form the basis.of a College botanical garden.
