Graduation 1987 Versatile Valedictorian A mature student from the Sunshine Coast, this year's valedictorian held the unusual distinction of being nominated jointly by the Business Management and Theatre departments. Shelley Nowazek, who graduated from the Accelerated Business Management Program (Marketing option), started her college career at the Sechelt campus, where she took several courses, including Creative Writing, and acted as stage manager for a play put on by the Theatre department there. Interestingly, it was Nowazek's involvement with the arts (she has stage managed many plays for the Theatre B.C. Festival) that led her into Business Management, because she became interested in the administration of the arts. She is hoping to eventually earn her BFA or MFA in Arts Administration. It is very unusual for anyone taking the accelerated Business program to take on extra courses, but Nowazek took Theatre this spring and acted as stage manager for the production of "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" at Presentation House. "With the kind of workload that Business Management students have and the kind of involvement required in our production course, she had to work very hard to keep up," commented Theatre instructor Dawn Moore. But her marks certainly didn't suffer. Despite the workload, Nowazek was on the Dean's List for the fall and spring semesters, and accumulated the remarkable total of seven Ats in her Business courses. Valedictory Address - an excerpt Capilano College is a microcosm. There is no conflict that we have not seen here which will suddenly spring upon us in another hall of learning, or in the world at large. Only the circumstances change. There have been many times here when I felt that I was insulated from the "outside" but it was always an illusion. Wherever there are people, there is the ever static, ever dynamic, interchange: society. Politics, and divergency are as much a part of life as breathing. Actively or passively, we are all involved. As children we were instructed, manipulated. We are no longer children, it is our dreams and ideas which will shape the pe future. COLOPHON However sporadically the Informer may appear in your mail, it is still trying valiantly to be a weekly publication, at least during the Fall and Spring terms. This newsletter is published by Information Services, A118, local 2002, and submissions are greeted with joy and delight. Photos are generally taken by Edna Sakata in MPC and prepared for publication by Dave Sharrock. Printing is done by Linda Givens and Dave Callow in the Print Shop, and distribution is handled by the Mail Room/Typing Pool. Most everything else can be blamed on Donna McMahon, but she'll deny it.
