Informer llano & elege Rob Turner, Vice-President, Student and Instructional Services, was selected as one of only 35 community college leaders to attend the Executive Leader- ship Institute. The non-profit educational consortium is sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College in cooperation with the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Dennis Wright, Assessment Specialist at ARC, has received the Distinguished Accomplishment Award from the Student Affairs Division of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services. The award is given to student affairs professionals who have made a significant contribution to education and training in student services. At the annual conference of the National Academic Advising Associa- tion, Dave O’Leary was elected out of eight candidates as Treasurer of the Northwest Region Board. He is the only Canadian ever chosen for the post. The association publishes a scholarly journal, maintains a clearing house of advising Diane Parker has moved from the position of Library Assistant I, Circula- tion, to Library Assistant II, Technical Services. Nancy Findlater, whose temporary position as Clerk I, Financial Services was to end Aug. 31, has been rehired for another month. The following temporary support staff have now achieved regular status: Jacques Morris - RFT Technician I, Computer Services Betty Gerela - RFT Accounting Clerk I, Financial Services Barb Smith - RFT Clerk Typist II, Supply and Services These support staff have left the College since the Spring term: Betty Nonay, Library Tanya Cooke, Art materials and provides financial support for advising research. Dave is already involved in planning the next annual conference, which will be held in Harrison Hot Springs in April 1993. Jane Hamilton, Managing Editor of The Capilano Review, has been elected to the board of directors of The Cana- dian Magazine Publishers Association. The association represents two-thirds of Canada’s magazines. It lobbies all levels of government on tax policy, tariffs, censorship, postal subsidies and arts council spending. During her two- year appointment, Jane will represent the interests of small literary maga- zines. Diane Blaney has been selected as the new chairperson of the Faculty Development Committee. Rob Turner, Vice-President Student and Instruc- tional Services, says, “We look forward to a fifth year of successful endeavors by the committee now under Diane’s capable leadership.” He expressed thanks to Ruth D’Hollander for her energy, commitment and leadership as chairperson for the last two years. Personnelly Speaking Sandra Chester, Personnel Services Jane Findlay, Switchboard After more than 16 years with the College, the husband and wife team of Neil and Sandra Chester have left to start a new adventure. Sandra has been the glue keeping the Personnel Depart- ment together while Neil has been active in the Athletics Department. Although their future plans are a mystery at the moment, we hear they plan to combine both of their talents. We are pleased to announce that Lucy Bleviss will be joining us as a Personnel Officer on Sept. 14. Lucy has held similar positions at Mount Royal College in Calgary and most recently at B.C. Gas. She brings lots of experience and enthusiasm to her new position. People...People...People... Dave Brewer, Director of Supply and Services, has been awarded a certificate of recognition by the Provin- cial Emergency Program for his commitment to emergency prepared- ness and response. The College’s new Registrar is Dianna Larsen. She has been at Okanagan College in Kelowna since 1978, where she was assistant director of student services. Aichi Gakusen Scholarship 1993 Up to three of Capilano College’s female students will get a chance to work and study next year at Aichi Gakusen College in Toyota, Japan. A committee of Capilano College faculty will select the scholarship winners from first- and second-year student applicants. Selection will be based on the students’ goals and how prepared they are to immerse themselves in Japanese lan- guage and culture. There is also an age requirement. Each scholarship is worth more than $25,000. An information meeting, featuring talks by past scholar- ship winners, will be held Tuesday, Sept 22, from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. in P-101.
