THE INFORMER PAGE 2 SEPTEMBER 6, 1989 New in town?? Are you confused? Still getting lost on the way to H Building? First, you can pick up a map in the A building, and second, you can ask questions. We have a whole lot of people here who have been around a long time. There are associations and committees for almost anything you can think of, and someone in a dark corner dreaming up some more. If you’re having trouble figuring out the ropes, ask someone. In the meantime, here’s an outline of how the structure works: The President: Big boss who won’t yell at you if you knock on his door Deans: More bosses who spend a lot of time in meetings thinking how to make things work better, then listening to people telling them how they should have done it. Associate Deans: They listen to the deans, sign a lot of forms and organize daily life in their divisions. Coordinators: These are faculty who don’t like to be known as absent-minded professors. They organize who teaches whom, where, and when. Divisional Assistants: The voices of experience. Not only do these people make it all work, they know what form goes with it. Treat them with great respect—their knowledge is not to be taken lightly. Other assistants: Too many to name here; they work in A/V, the library, labs, and offices all over the campus. They know how to help you get what you need or who to ask. Secretaries: Same as above with great phone skills. Clerks, receptionists and other people who probably resent being lumped in together like they don’t have anything unique to offer, they do. Get to know them and your life will be made a lot easier. Stay tuned to the next /nformer for a brief outline of all the departments on campus. And, if you haven’t been included here, yell. The Informer’s number is ... oops. computer malfunction. Welcome Back BBQ To help you get “back in the beat", come to the North Campus green and enjoy lunch served by our president, ' deans, counsellors and advisors. Stevenson Kellogg Review Class spec revisions Drafts of new class specifications (part of the exhaustive Stevenson Kellogg review process) will be showing up on staff desks within the next two weeks. “Remember, this is only a draft,” says Bruce Lucas, Personnel, who is busily preparing the documents. “There is a three week period when you can compare it to your own job fact sheet and the old class specification.” Bruce says the material will be clearly marked to show where the changes have occurred, and adds: “There will be plenty of opportunities for you and your administrator to go over them.” The job fact sheets were assessed according to ten factors: complexity of judgement, for instance, how many subject areas are you required to be knowledgeable on?; education; experience; initiative; result of errors (will the place fall apart?); contacts (internal, external); character of supervision (what level, complexity); scope of supervision (how many times do I have to tell you?); physical demands, and working conditions. Each of these areas was given a rating on a scale according to the descriptions on the job fact sheets; these ratings were then transferred to charts so the consultant could see in graphic terms the relative weight and complexity of each position. Known as “factor ladder charts”, these will be used to assess placement.
