The "house band" of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the orchestra's core membership includes some of the world's foremost instrumental soloists and ensemble players. Formed in 1988, the LCJO is dedicated to developing a performance repertoire comprised of historic compositions and newlycommissioned works for jazz orchestra. In addition to pieces by Ellington, Basie and Gillespie, the orchestra's archival repertoire now includes works by Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Fletcher Henderson, Woody Herman and others. It has also presented world premieres of works commissioned from Benny Carter, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Chico O'Farrill and Joe Lovano. The LCJO has embarked on numerous world tours and the group's music is documented on several fine recordings for Columbia/Sony. Wynton Marsalis, the most accomplished and acclaimed jazz artist and composer of his generation, and a distinguished classical musician as well, has been instrumental in bringing jazz to the forefront of American culture by force of his intellect, creativity and charisma. Mr. Marsalis' prominent position in the performing arts pantheon was underscored in April 1997 when he became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music. This honour, which for five decades had been the exclusive reserve of classical composers, is just the latest in a series of accolades he has earned throughout the course of his multi-faceted career as a virtuoso instrumentalist, an individualistic composer, an innovative band leader, a Grammy Award-winning recording artist and a dedicated educator. Founded in 1974, the Kollektief consistsof 11 musicians who are improvisers and iourneymen with excellent professional credentials. Breuker writes his refreshing music with these musicians in mind. JaneBunnett& The Spiritsof Havanawith MarilynLernerSextet June 24 Vancouver East Cultural Centre II This spectacular show presents two distinctive views of jazz with Cuban music. Jane Bunnell is known for her pioneering work forging jazz with Cuban folkloric roots music, as on her new EMI/Blue Note recording Chamalongo. Marilyn Lerner will perform strikingly original compositions, pushed to new heights, as on her recent Birds Are Returning CD on Jazz Focus. Juno-award winning saxophonist/flautist Jane Bunnell's love affair with Cuban music goes back to the early '80s. Since the release of her landmark recording Spirits of Havana six years ago, Cuban music has undergone a resurgence of popularity. Roy Hargrove and Steve Coleman have recorded in Havana, reminding us of the long affair between modern jazz and Cuban music that began with Dizzy Gillespie. With Chamalongo Bunnell takes all the strands of Cuban music-Afro-Cuban jazz, the chants of santeria, the rhythms of folkloric music-and weaves them together. This is passionate music played by an ensemble of Cuba and Canada's finest musicians. Montreal-born pianist/composer Marilyn Lerner has been active on the Canadian jazz/ new music scene for 20 years. She has numerous acclaimed CDs and a SOCAN prize for best jazz composition of the year (1994). She's performed with Jon Faddis, Paquito D'Rivera, Tito Puente, the Winnipeg Symphony and others. Her recent sextet CD was recorded in Havana last year. It combines modern jazz and Cuban rhythms with the influence of 20th century classical music. The results are exciting, virtuosic, swinging and mesmerizing. The show begins with Jane's large ensemble featuring pianist Hilario Duran and percussionists and vocalists. Many of the world's best jazz players like Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Eddie Daniels, Woody Shaw, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Jon Faddis and Benny Bailey have been members of this group. Gruntz's compositions draw from a wide range of musical sources-jazz, classical, and folk themes. Big band music is once again inAuencing the development of contemporary jazz, and the GGOB has been drawing huge audiences at major jazz festivals (Montreux, Northsea, Berlin etc.) as well as accolades from critics around the world. In the '80s he established himself as one of the best bassists of his generation with Ray Anderson and Gerry Hemingway in BassDrumBone. He's released a string of excellent CDs on the Enia label featuring his own writing and rock solid, deep wooded bass playing. Writer Kevin Whitehead described tenor saxophonistEllery Eskelin " ... as one of the most satisfying ... tenorists in New York, assimilating outside and inside approaches into a personal style that's harmonically wide open without losing the thread of underlying progressions." He's released numerous CDs as a leader and performed with Joey Baron, Joe Daley, Phil Haynes and others. A dynamic and inventive player, acclaimed drummer/percussionistGerry Hemingway was a long time member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet, he's also performed with Marilyn Crispell, Anthony Davis, Ray Anderson, Reggie Workman, Georg Graewe and many others. He has led his own quintet for the past decade releasing many highly praised CDs on the Hat Art label. Ray Anderson is a monster trombonist,a virtuoso who plays faster and with more variations of tone and timbre than his contemporaries. Ellery Eskelin is a highly sought after tenorsaxophonistwho mixes an understanding of bebop with the freedom of free improvisation. His Jazz Festival appearances here two years ago were breathtakingly exciting. Apart from leading his own trio, D.D. has worked with some of the most inAuential players on the scene including James Carter, Dewey Redman, Don Byron, Ray Anderson, Billy Bang, David Murray and others. For the past two years, Jackson has also participated in the development of a Broadway-bound stage musical on the life of Negro baseball league pitcher Satchel Paige. Since then his records have consistently been Canadian best sellers and he has won nearly every music related award available in this country. But just when fans and critics thought they had Colin's music pegged, he took an about-face from the electric rock records he had made in the past and recorded Colin Jame~ and the Little Big Band, a romping collection of swing classics from the '40s and '50s that teamed him with the inimitable Roomful of Blues. In 1995, Colin made Bad Habits (Warner). The record was a return to his hard rocking sound but with guests Mavis Staples, Lenny Kravitz and Waddy Watchel, the album showcased Colin's much more confident and soulful voice. With 1997's National Steel James collaborated with longtime friend Colin Linden ' on a collection of blues and R&B classics that won him five Maple Blues Awards and a 1998 Juno Award for best blues recording. Lonesome Monsters, the .,_ Lhasa June 28 Richard's on Richards " ... it (Lhasa'smusic) sighs and cries like the wind blowing through Mayan ruins."-Calgary Herald With immense theatrical flair, 25 year-old, Montreal-based vocalist Lhasa has won audiences over at jazz and world music festivals across the country. Sales of her CD La Llorona have gone gold in Canada, a feat all the more remarkable because Lhasa sings almost entirely in Spanish. Essentially, she's a singer of Mexican ranchera, an urban tradition from the '30s and '40s characterized by nostalgia and melancholy. What makes the husky-voiced Lhasa unique and exciting is the way she re-interprets the early ranchero traditions through a prism of diverse influences such as Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Jacques Brei and Maria Callas. The intensity and emotional depth she brings to her material is also quite overwhelming. The Llorona of Mexican mythology was a siren who seduced men with her sad melodies and lured them to the river's edge where her kiss turned them to stone. Lhasa evokes the spirit of the legend in a plaintive voice. name for Osborn's recent book is also the title for his collaboration with versatile improviser Graham Ord saxophones and adventurous bassist Paul Blaney. They use a lot of drums as well as the qualro, a mandolin-like instrument. The melodies are gorgeous and the tunes perfectly arranged, precise rhythms making way for singing or a drum section. Their vibrant bomb□ and plena sounds have roots in the coastal urban barrios of Puerto Rico. The driving energy of these sounds celebrates the group's African heritage and their "Puerto Rican-ness." Since 1983 Los Pleneros de la 21 has performed across the U.S. and Europe, while maintaining roots in New York City. Plena, a style featuring hand-held plena drums, are songs that report and comment on the history of the Puerto Rican people, in a manner often compared to calypso. Bomba is an exciting yet much older music and dance form which features barrel-shaped bomba drums. Percussion is also heard in the cua, guiro, and maraca and instrumentation includes piano and stand-up bass. An evocative, harmonically rich chorus answers the voices of the group's eloquent lead singers. They turn the stage into a community celebration in which the spirit of the barrio comes alive.
