THE INFORMER PAGE 3 MARCH 29, 1990 Discovered by Dave Brewer in the March 21 Coquitlam Now . Wrong man for exercise Dex Hallwood was the most watched employee at the District 43 school board office last week. Hallwood had the task of purchasing condom vending machines and condoms for the district’s senior secondary schools. After spending a day and a half in his office “checking out” various machines and condoms to make sure the district made purchases that meet stringent Health and Welfare Canada criteria, Hallwood said the whole thing was “interesting,” especially because his wife had been through a similar exercise as the purchasing agent for Capilano College. So why didn’t you just call her at the office and get all the pertinent information, asked a reporter. “Well,” Hallwood hesitated, “she’s not at work. She’s off on maternity leave.” The machines should be installed in a few weeks. Winning Strategy for Business Cap’s Business Management program is obviously doing its job right. For the second year in a row, Cap students have won the “Best Use of Strategic Management” award at the B.C. Colleges Business Education Competition. Ronda Travers, Darrel Loppe, Shaun Wilson, and Greg Dahlgren impressed the five industry judges and beat out teams from 13 other colleges and B.C.I.T. for the award sponsored by the Society for Management Accountants. Their coach, Graham Fane, also won the Best Coach award for the second year in a row. The competition, involving three intense days of simulated business situations, can go from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. “We’ll never be the same,” said the team of four. Congratulations to all. Club Optima, the event that brings top high school students to Cap to compete as English critics, video producers, linguists, musicians, and actors, drew over 240 students for its second year. Twenty-four schools from the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast participated, up from last year's 17. The students, competing in teams of two, win free courses at Cap and get to spend a day on campus seeing what college life is like. Comments ranging from “gnarly dudes" to “everything is beautiful" indicated that one of Bev Greene's main objectives ("...for the students to have fun.") was achieved. Thanks to all the volunteers from all College divisions who helped make the event a success. April is Cancer Month Sunshine!! A mixed blessing! Its warmth lures us outdoors, but the pursuit of the ultimate tan can be dangerous. The incidence of skin cancer has doubled every decade in the past 40 years in North America. The Canadian Cancer Society urges you to use SUNSENSE by protecting yourself from harmful rays that cause skin cancer and premature aging. e Use a sunscreen (and reapply after swimming) e Cover up (particularly if you are fair skinned) e Avoid tanning parlours e Consult a physician If anything suspicious is noticed on your skin, such as a change in a mole or birthmark, spreading skin growth, or open sore that doesn’t heal. Remember ! Early detection and prompt treatment are of key importance in treating skin cancer. CAPILANO COLLEGE HEALTH SERVICES (2964)
