Capilano College science student, Noorie Javer, is a recipient of a Duke of Edinburgh Award. Prince rewards students’ achievements Noorie Javer, a 19-year-old science student at Capilano College, had a royal run in on October 7. She was among the 131 B.C. and Yukon recipients of a gold-level Duke of Edinburgh Award presented by Prince Philip during his recent visit to Vancouver. Noorie said that meeting the prince was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. “For sure it was an interesting experience as it doesn’t happen every day,” she said. “He was really nice and really polite.” Noorie’s aspirations are leaning towards becoming a dental hygienist, although she hasn't completely made up her mind yet. “Tf I don’t pursue a career as a nurse or dental hygienist, I would like to stay at Capilano College and continue my studies because there are really good teachers here,” she said. Full story online Employee recognition expanded This year’s recognition event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 12 in the Library building, room 321. All College employees are invited to see their colleagues honoured. Light refreshments will be served. Those employees who joined the College in 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1987 will be recognized at this year’s event for longtime service. All honourees will receive a special invitation in the coming weeks. This year, the College will also be recognizing at the event those employees who retired in the fall and winter terms of 2002. The annual employee recognition event, which until now has recognized longtime service, is expanding to include two new categories: College Service Acknowledgement (for support staff), and Customer Relations Acknowledgement (for all College employees, including staff, faculty and administration). Full details online Jim Cooke, dean of Student Services and Foundation Programs at Capilano College, was recently elected as chair of the board for Literacy BC. Jim says that during his term as chair he hopes to raise the level of awareness of literacy concerns in this province and gain support through new partnerships for Literacy BC’s mission. “We hope to expand our sources of funding over the next couple of years and try to obtain more support from the business communities,” said Jim, who has been a member of the board for the past two years. “Tt is extremely important to us to get more people in B.C. involved in literacy issues.” Literacy BC is the lead provincial organization responsible for family literacy development and coordination in British Columbia. It provides a number of services and support for family literacy, along with a variety of public awareness and partnership building programs.
