Cap College
students will
face squeeze
INCREASED TUITION fees and higher
admission standards at
Lower Mainland universities are going to create
a demand for space in
college classrooms that
likely won't be met.

Dr. Paul Gallagher,
principal of Capilano College in North Vancouver,
said this week that the
changes in university admission policic;s mean -the college
will be faced with "more
students applying than we
(the college) will be able to
admit."
"Our own plans call for us
to admit at least the same
number of students as we had
last year (in university
transfer programs),"
Gallagher said. "If we can
swing it, we'll even admit a
few more."
The college is already forced to turn away hopefuls
each September because of
growing demand for postsecondary education and the
situation will only get worse.
Gallagher added that the
increases in tuition fees and
the raising of academic entrance standards at the
University of B.C . and
Simon Fraser University
expected to result in abQut
1,000 fewer admissions this
September
The pressure to take up
that slack will fall on the four
Lower Mamland colleges Vancou ver Community Colle ge , Dougla s College ,
Kwantle n College and
Capilano .
"We're tooling up for
many as 300 more applications (than in the past) and
that could be as many as
500," Gallagher said .

At the same time, he .said,
the college is committed to
keeping the current mix of
high school graduates,
mature students and others.
The college will also not
change its standards for admission, he said.
