Please advise AV as soon as possible what you anticipate your department will need in audio-visual equipment so the allocations can be made well in advance. All other activities will be ongoing all day Friday and Saturday. MEDIA PRODUCTION TAPE/SLIDE PRESENTATION ON CAPILANO COLLEGE This is being produced by Edna Stakata for Open House. The committee suggested that it be shown continuously in the foyer (south-west corner) of the main building. • •• 2 I' il I Page 2 SCIENCE As part of its lOth Anniversary celebration, the Natural Sciences Division planned to use part of its funding for a major speaker. A speaker is being invited for Thursday evening, March 8th, with the event scheduled to take place in the North Campus cafeteria. A request has been made to include this event in any advertising done for Open House. Wine and cheese will be served. Chemistry Ian Smith and Brian Stephenson will put on a Magic Show ... "Merlin's Feats of Magic". Highlights include: - wine from water - Vesuvius revisited - thunder sticks - Greek fire - burning water and including modern wonders: - money to burn - coal from sugar The presenters plan to dress as alchemists, pretending to use skulls, wings of bats, lets of toads, etc. for atmosphere. There was some speculation as to the reaction of the Principal when he signs the requisitions for these supplies! Ian and Brian are going to arrange to get music taped and special lights set up for special effects. The cafetheatre has been selected as the most appropriate site for set-up and viewing the performance. It was also noted that there are lots of exits in case anything "goes wrong"!! About 12 feats will be executed at each show. Scheduled times: Friday, March 9th Saturday March lOth 1:30 4:00 10:30 1:00 4:30 Physics Plans are to set up experiments in the lab. ongoing and will include: The display will be - Vandergraf electrostatic generator (makes hair stand on end} - laser beam holograms - three dimensional images created with curved mirrors ••• 3 Page 3 Biology Plans to set up from noon onwards on Friday and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Theme: Evolution--Plant and Human. They will be doing blood typing, health/physical evaluation, smoking machine, etc. Biology requested an extra $28.00 {maps). Mathematics All displays will be in the Math Lab. with possible overflow into the corridor outside. Planned activities are: - computer games with terminals - simple gambling games {dice and card) to demonstrate fair and unfair games that can be analyzed by the notion of "expected winnings .. - charts depicting historical problems that lead to interesting paradoxes and charts showing major historical problems in the development of mathematics - having many faculty members on hand to talk to potential students, hand out written material on the programmes and courses, and to operate the displays JUMPING DISC PROPOSAL The committee thought that this would be a good promotional item to have - and asked that two thousand be ordered instead of one thousand as requested. In the catalogue, it appears that an amount up to 4,000 can be ordered for the same price, so the order will go in that way. The discs will be imprinted with the lOth Anniversary logo. An extra $75.00 from the uncommitted sum has been set aside for this. MUSIC The Music Department would like to provide entertainment at the following times: Friday evening in the Cafetheatre Saturday afternoon {jazz band of professional performers) Saturday evening, student choir {in conjunction with a major event in the cafetheatre) 7:30 p.m. 2:30 - .4:00 From 7:00 on Music will also have displays in the Music portable, including Music Therapy films, demonstration of children's piano classes and a tape/slide show. The harpsichord will be brought to the Music portable from the Dynamics Lab. Tuning costs of $30.00 will be funded from the uncommitted amount. . ..4 Page 4 OUTDOOR RECREATION Although no representatives from this area have attended the planning meetings, several committee members felt that this would be one of the prime areas of interest for visitors. It has been requested that Don Basham be contacted about setting up an "invitational jog" around our track (including a visit to the Fitness Centre) and that the possibility of giving out participation ribbons be investigated. Also, a displ-ay of outdoor equipment and gear would be appropriate, perhaps with the chance to try some of it (such as walking in cross-country skis) • A proposal will be requested from the OR Co-ordinator (Brian White). ART DEPARTMENT In-house displays are being set up within the Art area - and in addition, the two events occuring around Open House time are to be advertised: March_ 8 - 17 show of faculty work at Presentation House and a show of Student work at Park Royal April 2 - 7. The committee asked whether Art was planning to have any workshop events where visitors could try their hands at some crafts. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMME It was noted with enthusiasm that Bob Gallacher and Gordon Wilson were planning to build a solar panel during the weekend. The committee wanted to know if they would be putting in two 10-hour days to get it done, and whether there were plans to go ahead regardless of the weather!? GEOGRAPHY No representative from Geography was able to attend the meeting, but the committee was interested to know what Geography was going to do with its $300.00 grant. It was explained that there will be a display in the physical geography lab, plus special handouts prepared for visitors~ and the orienteering course (with O.R.) ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The "Meet the Authors Night" is scheduled for Friday evening at 7:30 - possibly in B 115/116. Coffee and donuts will be served, and there will be a series of readings by six published authors (plus perhaps an aspiring seventh) who are faculty members. In the Humanities open area, a video tape player will be set up to run continuously. Tapes will be shown of all the poets who have given readings at the college. Concurrently, in the same area, a display will be set up of all the publications of The Capilano Review (and subscriptions will be sold). Also, another display of student work will be set up there, for which a special amount of $50.00 is being set aside from the uncommitted funds to defray the duplicating costs. • .• 5 Page 5 THEATRE The Department plans to stage improvisations in the afternoons on both days of Open House. Weather permitting, they will perform in the open area between the Tower and the Main Building; otherwise in B 115/116. MEDIA RESOURCES Media plans to set up continuous screenings of student productions in slide/tape, film and video. The Dynamics Lab will be opened up, with a formal studio arrangement to allow people to participate in various production activities such as being behind the cameras, operating the lighting, etc. Some discussion was held as to the assistance which may be required operating the various projectors and video equipment around the campus in all departments. Media stQdents will be on practicum at the time, so it was recommended that Ted Clarke be approached to do a lecture on handling the equipment for everyone who anticipates using such equipment in displays. OTHER DEPARTMENTS HAVE LET THEIR PLANS BE KNOWN AT PAST MEETINGS, SUCH AS: Retail Fashion: plans to hold a fashion show, perhaps incorporated into a major Saturday night event Business Mgmt will be mounting a computer display, with handouts of computer printed calenda~s, etc. AND THE COMMITTEE HAS MADE SPECIAL REQUESTS TO HAVE: Sports Display: Neil Chester to be asked to display trophies and team pictures. Counselling/ Learning Assistance That these areas be opened and staffed to answer visitors' questions. THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE AT THE CALL OF THE CHAIRMAN, GORDON WILSON. IF YOUR AREA HAS NOT BEEN REPRESENTED AT THE PLANNING MEETINGS, BE SURE TO ATTEND THE NEXT MEETING - AND SEND A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF YOUR PLANNED EVENTS TO VALERIE GILES.
