Informer Capilano = College Freedom and Success for ESL Student xam time last April at Capilano College found Salah Khazaal, a North Shore resident and student in the new Office Assistant Program for ESL students, studying hard. He knew he had already made the Dean’s list (last semester his GPA was a stunning 4.24; the maximum being 4.33). And he had already won the Nicholas J. Collins Scholarship for outstanding ESL students. So, what was he worrying about? “Everything,” says the Lebanese-born father of two. “I haven’t been a student since 1975. Twenty years! Returning to school was a tough decision. I was afraid of everything.” And so he keeps on studying hard. It hasn’t been an easy twenty years. Salah left war-torn Beirut in 1979 for Saudi Arabia. Once there, he worked as a legal secretary in a law office and as an executive secretary for a Saudi business firm. But by 1988, he wanted more opportunities for himself and his young he Maryanne Yzerman award was presented this spring to Irene Lau, a student in Capilano College’s Retail Marketing Coop Program. The award honours the memory of Yzerman who died in a boating accident in 1983. Lau was selected by her peers for most enthusiastic Student Honoured for Contribution EEE Salah Khazaal wife. Fortunately, he was sponsored by his uncle, Hassane Aboukhazaal, a longtime North Vancouver resident, and he and his wife, Mona, arrived in Canada in 1990. They now have two children, a boy, Suhail, 4, and a girl, Nadine, 1 and a half. In his spare time, Salah volunteers at Capilano College. He also tutors one of the College’s students. Last month he and his ESL teacher were interviewed on cable TV about the first-ever Walk for ESL in Stanley Park, a fundraiser by the TEAL Charitable Foundation to raise scholarship money for ESL students.
