Thursday, March 10 8 RASS R COTS : A dynamic new ensemble inspired by the tradition of New Orleans carnival bands. Leader Brad Muirhead has assembled an eight piece modern marching band whose musical horizons include the original and avant garde while never losing sight of its origins. Friday, March 11 CLAUDE RANGER Trio : One of the premier jazz talents in Canada, Ranger has collaborated with Sonny Rollins, Lenny Breau, Dave Liebman, Phil Woods and James Moody. His Vancouver trio features Scott White (bass) and Rob Frayne (tenor). Saturday, March 12 KATE HAMMETT-VAUGHAN and SECOND SIGHT: Featured at duMaurier Jazz Festivals, Hammett-Vaughan carries on the vocal tradition of Betty Carter and Carmen McCrae while retaining an original conception. She combines a sophisticated interpretation of melodies and words with a magnificent time feel. Second Sight features Ron Samworth (guitar), Rob Frayne (sax and piano), Ken Lister (bass), Claude Ranger (drums). Thursday, March 17 COAST QUARTET : Formed in 1981, this quartet explores the freer harmonic and rhythmic structures of contemporary jazz. Bill Clark (trumpet) and Pat Caird (reeds) are original members of the acclaimed VEJI ensemble. Bassist Rick Kilburn (formerly with Dave Brubeck ) is one of Vancouver's first-call musicians. Friday, March 25 LUNAR ADVENTURES : From jazz and harmolodic funk to Celtic and Calypso, Lunar has been featured at the duMaurier International Jazz Festivals (Vancouver), on CBC Radio Canada and in the Seattle New Jazz New City concert series. Saturday, March 26 UNIT - E (formerly the Graham Ord Trio} : The recipient of Alex Varty's Coltrane Giant Steps Award for 1987 (a shared honor with Phil Dwyer), Graham Ord has assembled a spirited and sensitive quartet. Percussionist Roger Baird, who worked in New York with William Parker (now with Cecil Taylor) and Billy Bang, has settled in Vancouver and has enriched the contemporary scene. New member Daniel Lapp is featured on both trumpet and violin. Paul Blaney (bass) brings it all together with a spontaneous and always swinging feel. Thursday, March 31 THEMBA TANA'S AFRICAN HERITAGE : Group leader Themba Tana draws on his musical experiences from Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique, and with Govind Dido, Albert St. Albert and Sal Ferreras creates an unforgettable musical experience. Origins New Orchestra Workshop was formed in 1977 by a group of Vancouver musicians to fulfill a need in the local creative music community for workshop, rehearsal and performance space. Early achievements include: Canada Council Explorations Grant in 1978; Sponsorship of Workshops by Dr. Karl Berger of the Creative Music Studio, Woodstock, New York; organization of Three Creative Music Festivals in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
