No supporter of the Croats, Tanner presents incidents when they have behaved less than ideally. The narrative style is very sparse and condensed, presenting much detail in each chapter. A good survey of a region still much in the news, this work provides needed background for the current events in the region. DR 1535 T36 1997 Free Speech in the College Community by Robert O’Neil O’Neil offers a patient, almost patronizing explanation of why universities cannot legally and should not morally curb speech. He dramatically illustrates the many types of problems that confront college/university administrators, using imagined characters and dialogues based on actual events. Among the most intriguing discussions are those on Internet access, e-mail, and what sort of power the university has over its electronic networks, as well as speech codes and the difficulties of defining just what real harassment is. LC 72.2 054 1997 Intelligence, Heredity and Environment, edited by Robert Sternberg & Elena Grigorenko Provides a comprehensive, balanced and up-to-date survey of theory, research and a diversity of viewpoints on the origins and transmission of human intelligence. BF 431 1534 1997 Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality by Neal Gabler Shakespeare warned us that all the world’s a stage, and now Gabler provides evidence that fiction and reality have become inextricably intertwined. He argues that a steady stream of public relations manipulations and escalating media hype have created a situation in which life has become a form of show business. Other peoples’ lives, especially celebrities, have become an ever-larger source of escape for ordinary people. PN 1995.9 S6 G23 1998 Virus X: Tracking the New Killer Plagues by Frank Ryan Contrary to the 1970s belief that epidemics would be controlled by vaccines and antibiotics, catastrophic epidemics, such as AIDS, Ebola, and the mad cow and flesh eating diseases have emerged. Dr. Ryan’s research into the most dangerous outbreaks uncovers frightening patterns indicating that deadlier diseases will emerge. Dr. Ryan concludes that new viruses arise not by chance but through the purposeful programming of evolutionary forces. He questions the human impact on an already delicate ecosystem and exposes our increasing vulnerability in a world out of balance.
