Winners again!

10th B.C. Colleges Business
Competition. This year marked the
seventh time that second year students
from the College’s three-year Business
Administration program grabbed a first
place prize. Despite encountering a
software glitch, students still managed to
win for best overall team and best
business plan.

“It’s very difficult to come out of this
competition with one, let alone two, of
the three big awards,” said Capilano
College Business instructor Graham
Fane. Graham, who also acted as team
coach, added, “This is a tough
competition and the fact that Capilano
College students win year after year says
a lot about their dedication and skill.”

The competition was held during the
weekend of Friday, March 5 and
Saturday, March 6 at Kwantlen
University College in Richmond. Nine
four-person teams from colleges and
institutes from around the province were
required to operate a medium-sized
manufacturing business in a highly

stressful, real-life business environment.
A panel of judges, comprised of senior
industry executives, acted as the board of
directors. Each team was judged on
approximately 50 different criteria from
financial performance to marketing and
human resource strategies.

Members of the winning Capilano
College team were: Stephanie Whitney,
Teanny Lau, Michelle Pope and Gerry
Marchiafava. Students Holly Geant and
Brandon Mah volunteered their time to
help organize and run the event.

“It was tough, but through hard work
and great training, we ended up coming
out on top,” said Gerry, who acted as the
student chief financial officer and vice-
president of operations.

Hosted by the Business Educators
Coordinating Committee, the event
offers participants an opportunity to
interact with other students and members
of the business community, and to
practice learned skills. Prizes for the
winners included cash scholarships from
the Institute of Chartered Accountants,
as well as equipment from other
sponsors.
