Healthstyles March is Nutrition Month Most Canadians are getting about 40% of their total calories from fat. If only one choice could be made to improve your diet, the best one would be to lower the amount of fat to at least 30%. High fat diets tend to raise blood cholesterol levels and subsequently increase your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Five steps to lower fat in your diet: 1) Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain bread and cereals. Limit croissants, doughnuts and pastries. 2) Select lean meats, poultry and fish. Limit sausages, bacon and fat deli meats. 3) Choose lower fat dairy products such as skim, 1% and 2% milk, yogurt and cheese. Avoid cream, ice cream and cream cheese. 4) Reduce the fat added in food preparation and at the table. Broil, microwave or bake, and avoid frying and deep frying. Limit gravies, butter and margarine as extras at the table. 5) Limit high fat desserts and snacks. Try fruit, sherbet, angel food cake and avoid potato chips, cheezies, nuts and chocolate.
