The Blues team won the Totem College ~ Athletic Association championship on March 7 and 8 in Victoria by beating Cariboo College, Trinity Western, and VCC, and they are going on to play Alberta and Nova Scotia this Thursday and Manitoba on Friday. If they win their games, they will be contenders in the finals on Saturday. _ The Canadian College Athletic Association Men's and Women's National Volleyball championships take place in SFU's gym starting at 2 pm Thursday, March 20 and ending with awards presentations at 8 pm on Saturday the 22nd. Among Capilano's players will be Debbie Kallenberger (Totem first all-star team), Gina Boratto (Totem second all-star team), Jennifer Lidster (Totem third all-star team), and Lori Mayervich, voted the Totem championship's most valuable player. Painting in Florence with Maclagan "What could be nicer," asks Dave Maclagan, “than sitting by the river Arno painting a watercolour study of the 14th century Donte Vecchio bridge in Florence?" For an artist with a passion for watercolours and European scenery, few things could be more satisfying than taking Cap's Watercolour Painting trip to Florence and Tuscany, which is being offered May 16 to June 7. Instructors David Maclagan and Harry Heine will be leading the tour, which stops in such places as Bologna, Venice, and Siena. The price of $2,252 includes airfare, hotel, day field trips, and instruction. Kilian on TV special CBC TV has a special coming upwhich should be of interest to the college community. A televised think tank entitled "The Lost Generation: Youth Unemployment", will be shown on CBC Saturday, March 22 from 9:30 to 11:00pm. The educational representative on the TV panel will be our own Crawford Kilian, and discussion will likely focus around’the federal government's recent report on youth unemployment. Student performance continues This week is your last chance to catch a- performance of "The St. Nicholas Hotel - Wm. Donnelly Prop." at the Presentation House Studio Theatre. The production runs each night until Saturday the 22nd at 8 pm and tickets are available from Humanities, from cast members, or at the door. And don't forget their special offer—dinner at Lonsdale's restaurant and theatre tickets for $11.95 per person. Students enter national competition Capilano College Art students will be entering their work in a juried show here next week, which could lead them to national recognition and major awards. The ACCC is, for the first time, sponsoring a national art competition, which will be taking place in Ottawa in October, and the ‘elimination rounds' are starting now. Here at Cap. students will enter their work in all media in a show in the All College Lounge which opens on Tuesday, March 25. On Saturday, March 29 the work will be juried by three eminent judges— Doris Shadbolt, Marie Shaw-Rimmington, and Allen Edwards. The 25 pieces chosen by the jurors will go on to a provincial juried show with 125 works from B.C. Colleges. Selected works from the B.C. show continue on to Ottawa, where national winners will receive awards, workshops, and money. This is an excellent opportunity for some of our art students to win recognition—we wish them all the best of luck. Clark, Verner go to Texas NISOD (the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) is holding its National Conference on Teaching Excellence in Texas this May, and two of our faculty members will be there to make presentations. Hilary Clark (Retail Management) and Bob Verner (Mathematics and Computing Science) were nominated by their colleagues to represent the college at the conference, which will focus on innovative and effective instructional strategies. The Master Teachers conference is being held at the University of Texas in Austin.
