14 Years Ago at Capilano College April 24, 1972 COLLEGE OPERATING BUDGET APPROVED The big news of this last week was that the operating budget for 1972-1973 (the one we have actually been operating on for three weeks) has been approved by Victoria without a cut. This means approval of the budget request as last negotiated with the departmental officials, with no reduction. AUDIO VISUAL PRODUCTION PROGRAM DISPLAY This last Monday, April 17, the Audio Visual Program put on a professional day at Frank Bakers to show the College and public, especially future employers, just what they are doing in the program. The enthusiasm of the participants helped make up for a disappointing turnout. GRANTS Brian White, our resident Geographer, had applied for a grant (in his capacity as a student at SFU) to survey Indian middens on the west coast of Nootka Island. Having been turned down, he now informs us he has accepted a commission from the National Parks Branch to survey historic sites in the Port Renfrew to Bamfield (the life saving trail) section of the new Pacific Rim National Park. May 15, 1972 FRENCH STUDENT WINS PRIZE Frank Reid has produly brought to our attention the fact that one of the French students, John Chamberlin, has won a $300 Alliance Francaise prize. The prize was awarded John after he beat out Douglas and Vancouver City College students in a competition on oral French ability. John has just completed his fourth semester at the college and hopes to put his prize money towards travel and study in France. DONNER STUDY AVAILABLE Student Services reports that they have just received a copy of Report #3 of the Donner Study entitled "The Impact of Community Colleges - Opinions, Survey and Tabulation of Responses". Apparently this is quite an extensive tabular report from an opinion questionnaire given to all students entering post-secondary education in B.C. in Fall 1971. There are two copies of the report, one in the Media Centre and the other in Student Services. As there is a very wide range of opinions solicited in the survey, it should be of interest to many College faculty and staff. COLOPHON The Informer is published sporadically, but with high hopes of weekliness, by Information Services, A118 or local 323 and 324. Submissions are more than welcome. Photos are generally the work of Dave Sharrock and Edna Sakata in MPC, printing is done by Linda Givens and Dave Callow in the Print Shop, and the distribution is handled by the denizens of the Switchboard and Typing Pool. We reserve the right to deny absolutely everything unless it's tax deductible.
