‘14 Years Ago - Capilano Retrospective October 2, 1972 KEITH WADE AS BUSY AS EVER "Keith informs us that he has recently completed writing and illustrating two chapters of a book on the natural history of Lighthouse Park, to be published before Christmas under the auspices of the Vancouver Natural History Society. About ten authors have contributed chapters to the work, which will in effect be a field guide to all aspects of the park's natural history. Keith contributed a chapter on Plant Ecology and on Reptiles and Amphibians of the park* THE SECOND CENTURY FUND "Keith Wade also informs us that land acquisition attempts are still in progress for a large parcel of land for an ecological-nature preserve. There have been major set-backs due to a proposed ski development in the area first considered for the preserve and also a change of policy by the Squamish Council. The ski development has now been either postponed or temporarily abandoned, but meanwhile alternative sites are under study. Stand by for further installments on this long and frustrating saga. = October 10, 1972 KILIAN SELLS DRAMA TO CBC "Crawford has sold his second radio drama to the CBC. This one is a 30 minute science fiction story titled "Little Legion." It deals with a time in the near future when kids play war instead of baseball or hockey. Crawford's first play, based on the 19th century Canadian novel, A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder, will be taped in November and produced next spring: October 16, 1972 RON HUNTINGTON DEBATES WITH JOHN SAYRE "This debate is tentatively scheduled for this Thursday at 11:30 at St. David's Main Hall. Ron Huntington is the P.C. Candidate in the Capilano riding and is very strong on the free enterprise system. John Sayre is a full-time faculty member in Economics and is not quite as enamoured with the free enterprise system. I (Alan Smith) will be chairing the debate." October 30, 1972 A ROARING SUCCESS "The Thursday debate was on the resolution (informally put) that the free enterprise system is best. John was naturally on the negative and Huntington on the affirmative. They both did an excellent job--with about 75 students really turned on to it and later involved in many good questions and points. The College A-V program students video-taped the entire session and the resultant tape was of such good quality that it went on Community 10 on Friday." November 6, 1972 NEW LAB SUPERVISOR "Dr. Read has announced the appointment of Mr. Barry Williamson as a new Lab Supervisor, replacing Gerry Cranham. Barry commenced his duties last Wednesday, November 1." November 14, 1972 LYNNMOUR WORK STARTS AT LAST "IT can say it now. WORK HAS BEGUN AT LYNNMOUR. This last week we finally got the signed Lease from the North Vancouver District and we also arranged an interim agreement for the architect to start work prior to the contract actually being signed. So Stevenson Construction Company is now on site commencing the small amount of clearing that is necessary. The contract negotiations should be completed in the next two weeks. In case any of you are worrying about too many trees or the wrong trees coming down, our landscape architect Mr. Robillard is on the site helping with the roping off of the areas to be protected. He tells me he will stand by these lines with a shot gun. If anyone is interested in the landscape plan I would be pleased to show it to them."
