Busy guide .Keeps.on trekking After a year studying environmental science at university, Squamish resident, Michelle Boender, knew a desk job wasn’t for her. “T travelled for a year and a half and then a friend of my family recommended Capilano’s 20-week Wilderness Leadership certificate program,” she said. “I decided to try it out because it was only a short commitment.” After completing the program at the Squamish campus, the former Surrey resident knew she had found her passion and immediately enrolled in Capilano’s two-year Outdoor Recreation Management diploma program. After graduating in 2003, Michelle worked in New Zealand, eventually moving to North Vancouver and then to Squamish where she could live in a smaller community closer to where she plays, rather than where she works. “Tm a member of the Nordic ski patrol at Cypress and work there four to five times a week during the winter,” she said. “I also work as an outdoor education guide for some private schools in Vancouver.” Capilano Acting for Stage and _ Screen instructor, Jackson Davies, is this year’s recipient of the Sam Payne award. Jackson was also named to the BC Arts Council board and is currently touring with Hockey Mom Hockey Dad, which played at Capilano’s Performing Arts Theatre on March 17 and 18. The Sam Payne award is voted on by industry peers and recognizes professional performers who Mountain guide and Squamish resident, Michelle Boender, hikes the backcountry near Mt. Baker ski resort. Growing up, Michelle’s family spent quality time outdoors camping and surfing. Today, her many activities include ski touring, running, surfing, mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing. “T do many things,” she said with a laugh. “I’m also a sailing instructor, working with the Sailing Education Adventures programs based in Sidney on Vancouver Island.” Through the spring and fall months, the busy 27-year-old works with SEA teaching school-aged children sailing skills, forest and marine ecology, and interpersonal skills. During the summer months she works even closer to the ocean. “Tm a sea kayak guide working at various locations on British display humanity and artistic integrity and who encourage new talent. Sam, who died at 70 in 1982, was a B.C.-born performer who trained at Britain’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts before returning to Canada to help found the country’s first professional theatre company in Ottawa. He everitually settled in Vancouver for a lifelong career, passing or his skills and experience to generations of actors. Jackson Columbia’s coast,” she said. “I also do hiking tours and have worked as a saltwater fishing guide. “Right now I’m taking a course to get my 60-ton skipper’s ticket,” she added. “I hope to captain a sailboat this spring and fall.” Taking things season by season, Michelle said that her schedule is so busy that even she is having a difficult time keeping it all straight. “It’s challenging, but right now it’s fun,” she said. “I love the variety and I'd like to own my own boat one day and do sailing tours.” Jackson Davies first came to nationwide attention in TV's long-running [he Beachcombers, and has since been busy as a producer, actor and writer on stage, TV and movies (Stakeout, Bird on a Wire). by Dr. Robert Campbell At the Council’s April meeting, the registrar announced the results of the recent Education Council elections, based on the new allocation of faculty seats to take effect August 1, 2008. Congratulations to Karin Jager (Fine and Applied Arts division), Marion Haythorne (Business division), Susan Hogan (Toursm and Howe Sound division), Laurie Jensen and Gordon Rudolph (Student Services division, Sunshine Coast and health care education). 1 was also re-elected as the representative from the Faculty of Social Sciences. The sad news about the election is that we _ still have two vacant student seats, as no one came forward to run. Council members believe that students are a vital part of the organization and we may have to develop creative ways _ to encourage more participation. To replace the recently retired Jim Cooke, Council elected Jackie Snodgrass as the new chair of the Education Council Curriculum committee (ECCC). _ Council also chose its inaugural members to our new Naming Opportunities committee: Lindsay Kasting, Nadine Bruce, Catherine Vertesi, and Stephen Williams. This committee is a Student opportunities expand A recent $20,000 donation from RBC will benefit Capilano students in the Itlustration/Design Elements & Applications (IDEA), Acting for Stage and Screen, and Musical Theatre programs. Since November 2007, RBC has provided Capilano with a total of $45,000 to support its programs and student educational experiences. Retired Capilano English faculty member, Bill Schermbrucker, and English instructor, Bob Sherrin, have signed a contract with Pearson Educational to produce a new and much expanded version of The Aims and Strategies of Good Writing. Bill wrote the original version of this text in 1976, and Bob produced a revised edition in 2004. Both versions have been produced in-house at Capilano for many years.
