THE INFORMER PAGE 6 OCTOBER 4, 1989 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT B y REID Toward a definition of Professional Development: The green paper recently discussed at a college-wide meeting has now been revised in light of the comments of those at the meeting and at other, preliminary meetings. The new version is printed on white paper and dated October 89; it will be mailed to all faculty on Friday, October 6. This draft supercedes all earlier versions. The Faculty Development Committee asks that each department or programme discuss this draft document, considering its key points and attempting to answer the discussion questions attached. Coordinators are asked to ensure that such a discussion takes place over the next month or so and to send to the Committee a brief reaction to the central concepts of the document. When these comments are collated, they will form the genesis of a final revision of the document, producing a proposed definition which will be sent to the Administration and to CCFA for discussions toward implementation. Please find a moment to read through the proposed definition and please participate in your local discussion. The ideas in this document may become part of a future Collective Agreement and will, certainly, have an impact on each of our professional lives. The Committee is most anxious that your opinions be reflected in the document. Conference: A two-day conference on “Ways of Knowing” will be held at Evergreen State College on November 2-3, 1980. This conference will be of interest to those exploring the teaching and learning process. Sessions include: “Knowing, Teaching and Learning in Community,” with Parker Palmer, “The Implications of the “Women’s Ways of Knowing Study’ for Teaching and Learning,” with Jill Tarule, “Cross-cultural Knowing,” and “Mind-Mapping,” among others. For information, please consult the brochure in the PD file in the library; please enquire at Circulation. Registration is due by October 16; the fee is US$90. GILBERT Faculty, Staff and Administrative Exchange: Our next college-wide meeting will be held October 12 at 12:30 in M101 and it will be an information meeting about faculty, staff and administrative exchange. Plan to attend to learn about the Community College Exchange Programme and how to arrange an exchange for yourself. Exchanges allow for renewal in a variety of ways: they provide a break from routine; they offer new surroundings, new colleagues and new ideas; they sometimes provide access to technologies or facilities which we do not enjoy, and they sometimes allow us to share knowledge or technologies we do have with others who do not. People who have been on exchange consistently report personal and professional benefits from the experience. Have you been considering an exchange?
