JULIAN PRIESTER with the BILL EMES TRIO JULIAN PRIESTER, one of the world's major trombonists for the past three decades, makes an all too rare appearance in our city. The last chance Edmonton audiences had to see hear him was as a member of Sun Ra's Omniverse Ultra 21st Century Arkestra during JAZZ CITY 1989 and, before that, as a member of the Dave Holland Quintet at JAZZ CITY 1984. Born in Chicago in 1935, Priester began playing the piano at the age of 10, before switching to trombone and baritone horn. He began his professional career in 1953 as a member of one of Sun Ra's first Arkestras. He stayed with the Arkestra for the next five years, while also working with Lionel Hampton, Dinah Washington and others. In 1958, Priester moved to New York to work with Max Roach in a band that included Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan and Booker Little. He joined Duke Ellington's Orchestra in the late '60s, and in 1970 joined Herbie Hancock's Sextet with Eddie Henderson, Benny Maupin, Billy Hart and Buster Williams. In the mid-'?0s, Priester moved to San Francisco, freelancing and experimenting with electronic effects before hooking up with bassist Dave Holland in the early '80s. He left Holland's group in 1985 and settled in Seattle where he has been leading his own projects and working in the free improvisational ensemble Quartet! with vocalist Jay Clayton, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jerry Granelli. 0 l 5 -- - - - - - ' - - - - - - - - - - - - - JAZZ WORKS: a non-competitive festival The first annual JAZZ WORKS jazz band festival is a three day, non-competitive event for young musicians at the junior high, high school, college and community level. Over a dozen ensembles-ranging from small combos to big bands and hailing from every corner of the province-have registered for this unique three day event. Each ensemble will receive a 1½hour private lesson with a world-class adjudicator/clinician/educator, where the group's abilities will be assessed based on the performance of three compositions. The clinician will then work directly with the band, providing practical advice for building on strengths and overcoming weaknesses in a "horn-in-hand" session. As well, a limited number of student bands will be invited to perform with featured clinicians on the Thursday and Friday evening concert programs. TOMMY BANKS, Edmonton A busy composer, arranger, pianist and jazz educator, Tommy Banks is possibly best known as the musical director for the 1988 Winter Olympiad in Calgary. The double album recorded by his big band at the prestigious Montreux International Jazz Festival won both the coveted Juno Award and the Grands Prix du Disque-Canada. DENNY CHRISTIANSON, Montreal A former mainstay on the L.A. studio scene, Denny Christianson has recorded with such greats as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson. In recent years, he has been touring and recording with his Denny Christianson Big Band which appeared at the Yardbird Suite in February of 1990. He also directs the award winning CJAD All-City Big Band for young musicians in Montreal, and his commitment to jazz education has led him to teach at McGill, Concordia and Universite de Montreal. PAT LaBARBERA, Toronto Anoted saxophonist and respected teacher, Pat La Barbera has played in some of the world's best jazz bands, including those of Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Woody Herman and Elvin Jones. His teaching credits include 11 years on the faculty at Humber College with summer stints at the Banff School and the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camp. GORDON TOWELL, Festival Director With a background in education and a masters degree in music, Gordon Towell is fast becoming recognized as a brilliant jazz educator. Originally trained on the classical violin, Kang has played in such diverse musical genres as calypso, salsa, reggae, South Indian classical, Western classical, and noise. Sia voe Tango Ensemble grew out of his desire to explore his passion for these diverse forms within the context of a free, acoustic jazz ensemble, and, the result has been what is arguably the most exciting, innovative jazz ensemble to have emerged from Edmonton in some time. Slavoe Tango's use of humor and musical juxtaposition places them firmly within the tradition established by such musical innovators as The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Bill Frisell, and The Jazz Passengers. And, yes, their repertoire does include the odd tango. The ensemble's two night debut at the Yard bird Suite this past September drew capacity crowds and a tour of the Western Canadian Jazz Festivals is in the works for this summer. 0 THE VARDBIRD SUITE USES ood • rcuss1on 10 Fri - Sun, Feb 15 - 17 THE FRI NGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRI NGE • TH~ ............-..........,.............,...,.-.,.,..,,,,.,..,..,.....,.,,..-.......,~GE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • HE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRI NGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRI NGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE ' THE RINGE • THE FRINGE ' THE FRINGE • THE FRI NGE • THE FRINGE • THE FRINGE . Though the City has not yet passed the final reading at the time of this writing, Barry Zal manowitz informs us that it looks quite definite that the Planning Commission will adopt Plan 1A for developing the 103 Street Corridor, which means the Yardbird gets to stay in everyone's favorite Edmonton entertainment playground of Old Strathcona. Thanks to especially Barry, and also to the EJS Planning Committee of Marc Vasey and Adrian Albert, and to all the other Old Strathcona community groups who were very vocal in theirsupportof the Yard bird. Jazz looks like it is here to stay, keeping company with the other great music clubs, theatres and societies on the South Side. Now we can really get on with some long range plans. . . .
