Art instructors on display in Gastown Circle Craft if a Gallery/Shop on Water St in Vancouver and what particularly inter- ests us about it at the moment is its show of B.C. handcrafts for home or office in- teriors from Feb. 2 to March 6. On display will be hand made furniture, unique wall hangings from quilted to hand spun, woven and felted rugs, hand painted silk, fine pottery and woodwork and some of the art- ists involved are from the College - Donna McLaren, Roger Stribley, Rose Naumann, Leslie Richmond and Mieneke Mees. This is an opportunity to see some of the beauti- ful work they do. Increasing Accessibility ~ Special Needs Advisor works out of LAC Our new Special Needs Advisor, Paul Jones, is no stranger to the problems of the dis- abled student in post-secondary education. Jones, whe has studied at UBC and the U of Toronto, has his MA in Arts and has taught English at UVic and UBC, is here to help get information to students, staff and faculty, to coordinate college services and make referrals, and to provide ser- vices requested by students, such as tap- ing books, helping students with mobility problems and writing exams for students unable to do so. This semester on campus Jones says he has had contacts with vis- ually impaired students, a deaf student and students with cerebral palsy and arth- ritis. How accessible is Cap? Not too bad, says Jones. Of course the top floor of NF isn't accessible and some of the C porta- bles are difficult, but the biggest prob- lem is the division between the North and South campus. Wheelchair students can only use the fairly steep roadway and _ take their chances with the traffic. The prob- lem should be solved by fall, however, with the opening of the new building. Meanwhile Paul feels we should be paying more atten- tion to the problems of deaf and blind students. Paul's services are available to any student with a disability registered in a regular program at Cap. His position of Special Needs Advisor is new and at the moment there is only funding for the job until April or so, but hopefully the Mini- stry of Education will review the program and make it part of the permanent budget in coming years. Paul Jones’ can be found in the Learning Assistance Centre (A110) Monday to Friday from 10 - 4 or at the end of local 424. This is a little late, but Welcome to Cap, Paul. And we hope you'll get the funding for many more terms. Information Services Local 323/324 Informer deadline: Thursday noon
