College as a LOT sponsor. A LOT to offer Capilano College students are taking full advantage of an excellent networking opportunity that is presented annually to post-secondary learners who are in their final year of study. The Vancouver Board of Trade’s Leaders of Tomorrow program involves post-secondary students, recent graduates, and mentors from the business world who realize that there is more to a successful business career than a post-secondary degree. Since 1999, 37 Capilano College students have been involved with the program. This past year, Dean of Business, Catherine Vertesi (left), accepts a plaque recognizing Capilano LOT accepted nine College students, the largest number from any college or university college. All are from the School of Business, except Emily Hamer, who is enrolled in the Asia Pacific Management Cooperative program. “I can’t see academic life without LOT,” says College Business instructor John Brownlee-Baker, who has been a mentor in the program for three years. “The enthusiasm is infectious and so motivating.” Full story online Diversity essay winners Two student essayists were winners of the Capilano College Foundation’s newly-created Diversity Awareness Essay Award. More online NiteCap hits a high note Submitted by Réjean Marois The following is Réjean’s report on NiteCap’s recent tour to the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival in Banff, Alberta. “We flew in to Calgary on Saturday and shuttled to Banff to arrive for our sound check at noon. Unlike the last trip, everything was in place and it went very smoothly. The festival prescreens tape auditions in four categories from each group attending the annual event — choirs, vocal jazz, concert band and stage band — in order to guarantee a minimum of quality. We gave two concerts on Saturday, April 24 and two on Sunday, April 25. The program included NiteCap for the first 40 minutes, followed by the McGill Jazz Orchestra. Each concert concluded with a NiteCap/McGill selection, featuring the vocalist Kristin Korb, who was part of our jazz series this year. The Eric-Harvie Theatre can hold 950 spectators and each of our performances was with a full audience. That means NiteCap performed in front of at least 3,500 music students and music teachers from all across Canada. Every NiteCap performance impressed a lot of people and each one ended with a standing ovation.” Full report online NiteCap gave two successful concerts on a recent trip to Banff, Alberta.
