Guitarist Colin Story, a first year student in the Jazz Studies program at Capilano College, was selected in a national search for outstanding young jazz musicians to attend the Galaxie Jazz Clinic at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival this June. Colin was flown, all expenses paid, to Ottawa for the event and rehearsed and attended clinics with a select group of young musicians from across Canada. On Friday, June 30, the group will open for jazz legend, McCoy Tyner, on the main stage of the festival in Confederation Park. Engusn Writer and College English instructor, Ryan Knighton, is the author of a recent book called Cockeyed: A Memoir. Described as “achingly honest” by a Vancouver Sun reviewer, the book is a hilarious and touching account of Ryan’s journey into blindness. Published by Penguin Canada, the memoir is receiving wide publicity through the Canadian media. Congratulations, Ryan! Results are in for Joseph Cooke, the fourth-year Tourism student at Capilano College who captured the British Columbia CIBC Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his company Salt Water Chefs. Joseph flew to Toronto in May where he competed for the 10° annual national CIBC Entrepreneur tough and the judges had a difficult time selecting the grand of the Year Award. Competition was _ Joseph Cooke prize winner. When the dust had settled, Joseph had landed in the top four—an impressive placement for a student who, according to his instructors, is going to go far. Diana Twiss and Pat Hodgson from the Community Development and Outreach department at Capilano College, in partnership with the City of North Vancouver and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 389, are recent winners of a national award of excellence. The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) selected the three partners as winners for Municipal Workplace Literacy Achievements — Development of Effective and Successful Partnerships. The goal of the partners is to provide a worker- centred learning environment for the City of North Vancouver employees. The awards, presented in Montreal on May 30, celebrate the efforts that outstanding people and organizations have made to municipal workplace education and literacy programs. This is the first time that a community college has been part of a CAMA partnership. The following third-year IDEA students were winners of Salazar Awards, presented annually by the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) and announced in May: Sherry Jang, first place winner and recipient of a $500 scholarship; Robyn Sommerville, second place and honourable mention; Olga Gryb and Kathryn Wright, third place and honourable mention (equally shared). Capilano College Animation program grad, Lauren Airriess, is one of three award winners selected by Studio B Productions, one of Canada’s leading animation studios. Based upon her portfolio, Lauren received a $2,000 scholarship and the opportunity to work with Studio B during a four-week paid internship. She will be working in the design and storyboard department on George of the Jungle and Ricky Sprocket —Showbiz Boy.
