~ ~ ~*~ Keith Wades into lecture An opportunity to both enjoy yourself and contribute to a worthy cause is coming up this Wednesday evening (May 8). An illustrated lecture on China by Dr. Keith Wade is being held at West Van. Secondary and all proceeds from the $3.50 admissions will go to a scholarship fund for science students. This is the first in a series of fund- raising lectures planned by the science department for this year, and it will undoubtedly be one of the best. Wade, who is a well known ecologist-biologist when he isn't teaching Biology classes here, went to China in 1981 as one of a five- member Canadian Botanical Delegation, and this slide-show and lecture is a record of that trip from both the scientific and human interest points of view. Although smaller in land area than Canada, China contains more than five times as many plant species, and this great wealth of wild plants has long been of enormous interest to Western botanists and horticulturalists. "In horticultural circles, China is frequently called ‘The Mother of Gardens''', said Wade. "It is the ancestral home of literally thousands of Our most popular and beautiful garden trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, which were mostly introduced to the West in the last 1800's and first three decades of this century." The Canadian delegation visited the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, stopping at universitites, botanical institutions, botanic gardens, and visiting the mountain areas, with their enormous variety of wild plants. This lecture is your chance to get a second-hand glimpse of 2800m Mt. Omei, a spectacular limestone mountain on the western edge of the Great Red Basin in Sichuan, the limestone caves of Yunnan, and the tropical botanic garden in Canton (now Guangzhou). Things will get underway at 8 pm in the auditorium at West Van. Secondary. Ss “ ‘ % Enrichment workshop upcoming On Thursday, Mav 16, approximately 90 outstanding senior math/computing science and science students from the North Shore, Howe Sound, Sunshine Coast, East Vancouver, and North Burnaby regions will participate in the College's 5th Annual Science Enrichment workshop. This will both provide anopportunity for highly motivated Students to become acquainted with some interesting techniques in the different disciplines, and for them to become acquainted with the College's laboratory facilities. This has been a very successful program, and the Natural Sciences Division is happy ‘to see it continue and expand.
