THE INFORMER PAGE 4 OCTOBER 1, 1991 S.1.8. Workshop The weather was perfect, the setting spectacular, and the audience enthusiastic at this summer’s Student and Instructional Services Workshop held in the new Sportsplex August 20. Alan Smith, Director of Planning, started off the workshops with a statistical snapshot of Cap’s former students. His surveys (begun in 1985) include every- thing from average ages of grads to their evaluations of courses, programs and services. In some parts of the U.S., he told us, ongoing post-secondary funding is tied to similar surveys. He suggested that this trend to direct funding accountability may emerge in B.C., and that his data will be valuable in future planning for the College. Louise Krohn’s report on the 1990 Climate Survey pointed out changes in responses from the 1988 survey in several categories. One interesting discovery was the importance of quality time at work, over and above just receiving a paycheque. Louise stressed the value of the questionnaire, saying it leads to important changes at the College. In the final presentation, Joe Iacobellis and Neil Chester introduced the new Sportsplex staff and offered an overview of their plans for the fall. They hope to make the Sportsplex a central focus of campus life, and a healthy place for students to “hang out”. In addition to athletic events, a variety of cultural and theatrical events will be scheduled, and the North Shore commu- nity will be invited to participate. Following a Sportsplex tour, Cap’s Food services set out a beautiful buffet lunch under umbrellas on the patio. Prizes were presented to Judy Stear, Film and Video services; Alan Smith; Doreen Cottrell, Registrar’s Office; Nash Dahalla, AV; Di Knight, MPC; and Robyn Jenssens, Library. Marie Toompuu, Counselling, won the big prize of a track suit. A special thanks to Lynne Somerville, Anne Moye, and Joe Iacobellis for their participation on the Work- shop Planning Committee, and to everyone who took time from busy start-up schedules to join us for the morning. —Jolene Bordewick, Workshop Chair United Way Kickoff The United Way Campaign kicks off with the Presidents’ Cup soccer game Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Last year’s campaign raised over $10,000 in contri- butions from the College community. Our goal this year is to increase participation in the campaign. Please join your colleagues in this effort. You can designate your contributions to go to the United Way, its member agencies and/or Cap College for scholarships and bursaries, which are matched dollar for dollar by the provincial government. Watch for information on the 1991 Pledge Cam- paign in your mail and in future Informers. What’s New in the Library In the past year, many of you have become familiar with the yellow “What’s New” slips that announce new titles available at the library. These slips generated many positive responses. We are now refining this procedure in a way that we feel will be more efficient for the library, and we will continue to provide the College faculty with up-to-date notification of new library acquisitions. Each department will receive the same “What’s New’ slip. Order forms for each new title of interest to the department will be attached to the slip. Titles that were recommended by librarians or members of the department will be included. Departments may wish to circulate the order slips among faculty members, or post them in a central location. Remember that requests for books for use next term should be sent to your library liaison (see Key to the Library for Faculty) during October. — Karin Hall 2nd Annual PRESIDENTS’ CUP BCIT VS CAPILANO COLLEGE Friday, October 4th 7:30 pm Swangard Stadium Tickets $2 available at BCIT & Capilano College Information & Group Sales * Call BCIT Recreation & Athletics 432-8287 or 432-8612 B.C.
