College Achievement and Support Program Entrance Requirements For admission to C.A.S.P. at Capilano College, you mu st have either a secondary school certificate or equivalent (G .E.D.), or be 18 years of age or over. For students without grade 12 completion, evidence of success in academic upgrading is required. A personal interview is also required. Successful applicants are admitted in September for the Fall semester. There may be, each year, a limited number of positions available for a January (Spring semester) entry. Are You English Placement Test Requirements - in need of improving your essay writing, reading, and study skills? C.A.S.P. wants you to be working at the most appropriate level in English. All students who have not recently done so MUST arrange to take the English Placement Test before entry. Please call C.A.S.P. for a list of times that this test can be taken. In addition, diagnostic testing in the reading area is undertaken by all students. The results of these assessments are used to help students with appropri ate course planning. - curious about the opportunities and responsibilities awaiting you in post-secondary education? - interested in increasing your chance of success in your first year of college? Would You Like to Financial Assistance - take on the challenges of collP.ge with social and academic support? It is the responsibility of each student, if eligible for assistance through his/her Band, to make arrangements for postsecondary funding. This should be done as much in advance as possible. Information on other forms of financial aid (B.C. Tuition Fees and Other Costs Then Consider C.A.S.P. The College Achievement and Support Program is a one year program being offered at Capilano College in cooperation with the Anderson Lake, Burrard, Mt. Currie, Sechelt, and Squamish Indian Bands along with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. The program is similar, but not identical, to the successful College ·Achievement Program that has operated at Fraser Valley College in Chiliwack and Abbotsford for the past seven years. In 1985-86 the first group of students was served by this program and the 1986-87 term will likely see C.A.S.P. courses available to second year students. There are three main components to C.A.S.P.: 1. A set of core support courses designed to allow students to attain their maximum academic potential. I The full amount of your tuition costs cannot be determined until your final course selection. In 1985-1986, the fees for ONE SEMESTER (four months) for a five course program (15 credit hours, which is considered average) were approximately $360.00. Textbooks and supply costs can range from $100 to $200 per semester. Housing There is a Housing service at the college to help you find suitable acconmodation if you are planning to move to North Vancouver. The C.A.S.P. office offers information as well on room and board available to Native college students. Students should start their "hunt" for accommodation at least a month before they plan to begin classes. Sometimes, moving to the city involves a difficult adjustment. C.A.S.P. staff are always available to help make the move to the College and North Vancouver an easier one. Interested? Then ... 1. Please make sure that you have read this brochure carefully and completely. 2. Obtain a copy of the current Capilano College Calendar and Semester Timetable. Read these carefully to familiarize yourself with course possibilities of interest to you. 3. Fill out both the C.A.S.P. Application Form and the Capilano College Application for Admission Form. Mail these, along with your secondary school, A.B.E., or College transcript, to C.A.S.P., Capilano College, 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver, B,C, V7J 3H5, . 4, When we receive you application, we will send you a letter acknowledging receipt and asking you to phone us to arrange for a personal interview (986-1911). During the interview you will: a) b) c) be made more familiar with the program and course offerings be encouraged either to present your English Placement Test score or arrange to write the test before registration be encouraged to write the G.E.D, test within the coming year (if you do not have a grade 12 certificate), 5. After the interview your completed application form will be forwarded to the Registrar's office for processing. 6. You must provide us with a CURRENT contact phone number and address so that we can inform you of your college registration date and procedure. Counselling and a set of support services that help students to make the transition from wor k or high school to academic life at Capilano College. 3. A Native Student Centre, centrally located on the Lynnmour campus in North Vancouver, which has been created and specially furnished for students to relax and to learn in a comfortable, supportive environment. Programs and events for both C.A.S.P. students and the non-Native College community are offered through the Centre: direct involvement of the five Indian Bands served by Capilano College is a regular part of C.A,S.P. activities. (The counselling services and student centre are also available for the benefit of all Native students enrolled at Capilano College in programs other than C.A.S.P.) Core Courses SPRING 1986 C.A.S.P. 101 (Intensive Study Skills II) This course is offered as a continuation of C.A.S.P. 100 and provides for the improvement of college reading and study skills. Basic course content includes strategies for reading the college text, time management, note taking, study organization, exam preparation, critical reading, answering essay questions on exams, and spelling improvement. C.A.S.P. 111 (Career Planning in the Computer Age) An introduction to personal career planning, this course explores successful job hunting and confidence building strategies. Students will "make friends with a computer" in this course as well as complete a supervised job practicum with a community agency. FALL 1986 C.A.S.P. 100 (Intensive Study Skills I) This course has been designed to provide the opportunity for the development of effective college reading and study ski l ls at an introductory level. Basic course content includes strategies for reading the college text, time management, note taking, memory skills, vocabulary expansion, and study organization. C.A.S.P. 110 (Personal Development and Cultural Studies) In this course personal growth is emphasized through an increased understanding of the way individuals are affected by various groups: family, school, colll1lunity, and cultural. An introductory Native Studies component is included. Peer support groups will be created during the course and the development of various college skills, including communication and leadership skills, will be encouraged. SPRING 1987 (See Spring 1986 courses.) Other Courses In addition to the C.A.S.P. courses and English, students may enroll in other courses on a full or part-time basis (at the College preparatory or first year levels). Capilano College opens the door to an exciting range of career programs and academic courses.
