Gallagher Scholarship winner — “a strong and giving person” The regulations of the Paul Gallagher Scholar- ship for Excellence make provision for giving no award in the absence of sufficiently qualified applicants, and it is no wonder why. The basis for selection for the award is: "demonstrated scholastic achievement, qualities of leadership, an enthusiastic and optimistic approach to work and leisure, warmth and compassion towards others, and a belief in the innate goodness of people"—an impressive bill to fill. This year, nonetheless the Selection Committee succeeded in finding an applicant who measures up to those impressive standards and awarded the scholarship to Margaret (Maggie) Goulding. A graduate of North Vancouver Secondary, Goulding went into the field of commercial general insurance, specializing in marine insurance, and stayed in it for eleven years. She started taking evening courses "Many people give up hope and dreams, and allow their energies to ebb away under the fierce strain of a prolonged struggle against cancer. Maggie has not given up, but has come back from repeated setbacks to reaffirm her strong love of life...." at Capilano in 1978 in Theatre, English, and Art History, and then enrolled last fall as a full time student. But Maggie's story is best told in her own words from her application for the scholarship. “Having worked in private industry for eleven years before returning to school as a full time student, I have developed diverse interests, both personally and professionally. "While working full time, I enrolled in as many evening study programs as my work schedule would permit. This approach to both my work andmy studies made both areas enjoyable and each benefitted from the other. "I have been a member of Big Sisters since November 1984 and am currently President of the Board of Directors.
