I am very excited about the 2000 edition of the Festival, and confident that it will live up to these expectations. From solo balloon to big band, Klezmer to Cuba, a new jazz opera to New Dutch Swing, it is our most ambitious and varied program to date. It's a program that highlights a broad range of innovative forms of musical expression, and that promises to build on the Festival's reputation for presenting world-class artists not frequently programmed by other Festivals in the region, country, or continent. In its unique focus on cross-cultural collaborations and improvisations, this year's program celebrates an international exchange of cultural forms and knowledges, and seeks to develop new, socially responsive forms of community-building across national borders. The force of this music resides in its ability to transport us into uncharted zones of wonder, to set us a-tingle with its extraordinary creative vitality, to animate public life with new communities of sound. Come with open ears, and not only will you be surprised, moved, and rewarded, but you'll also be encouraged to participate in the creation of a unique, vibrant, and co-operative community. ADELEINE carefully lifeware C/MENT FONDU owards the end of last year's Festival, there was one question that was repeatedly asked of me by literally dozens of audience members: how would we be able to top the 1999 artistic program? What could we possibly do in our 2000 year that would live up to the expectations generated by such a successful 1999 program? One reviewer, in fact, concluded his review of our Festival with a tip to organizers: "don't mess with perfection." I mention these anecdotes not to suggest that we've achieved perfection, but rather to offer some sense of the expectations which our Festival continues to generate amongst both organizers and audience members. The Guelph Jazz Festival has been tremendously successful in cultivating an audience that now expects us to deliver a compelling, challenging, ambitious, and often unpredictable program of the very best in innovative jazz and creative improvised music. My heartfelt thanks to the community of dedicated organizers who work year-round behind the scenes to make our five days of music such a grand success, as well as to our many sponsors and onsite volunteers. And kudos to you, our audience, for forming your own community during your stay in Guelph. It's wonderful to see the same faces returning year after year, and wonderful too to know that your kind words about our Festival are travelling fast and wide, and, indeed, helping to attract new audience members both locally and from as far away as Europe, Africa, and Asia. Please do continue to spread the good word about jazz in Guelph. I look forward to seeing you at the Festival. -Ajay Heble Sunlight. Fine meals. Great deals. Films. Novels. Guilty pleasures. San Francisco pianist/composer/activist Jon Jang is the central figure in what is surely one of the most vital and compelling cross-cultural arts movements in contemporary jazz. As the co-founder of the influential Asianlmprov Records and the leader of several groundbre\lking ensembles--including the Pan-Asian Arkestra, the African-Chinese Sextet (featuring David Murray, James Newton, and Liu Qi-Chao), and the recently formed Beijing Trio (with legendary drummer Max Roach and erhu virtuoso Jiebing Chen)--Jang has garnered worldwide attention for developing an inventive new music out of Asian and African American traditions. While Jang is perhaps best known for the range, majesty, and intensity of his stirring large-scale compositions, it's the striking beauty of his piano playing that will be in evidence during his intimate duet concert at this year's Guelph Jazz Festival. He'll be joined in this Canadian premiere performance by Paris-based tenor sax giant David Murray. Murray is, simply put, one of the greatest living saxophone players in jazz, and those who saw his previous appearance in Guelph (with D.D. Jackson) will know that we are in for a genuine treat. Winner of the prestigious Jazzpar Prize--perhaps the highest international honour in jazz today--Murray has recorded well over 150 albums, and many of these have already been accorded legendary status. To say Marilyn Lerner plays piano while Lori Freedman plays clarinet barely begins to describe the remarkable . .. tonal universe they live in." SUNDAY, 10:30AM, WOLTER RIVER RUN CENTRE WIERBOS (Holland) The wonderfully gifted ICP trombonist draws from the rich tradition of the classic Ellington trombones, Lawrence Brown and Tricky Sam Nanton, combining his range of charming mute and plunger sounds with jaw-dropping technical facility in all registers. The subtitle to his solo record, X-Caliber: A Demonstration of Extreme Trombone Techniques, belies the sweet lyricism, wit, and narrative drama ofWierbos' instant compositions, elements which make X-Caliber one of the most achieved solo wind works in recent years. Wierbos is the winner of several awards, including the Laren Jazzpodium Prijs, the Podiumprijs for Jazz and Improvised Music, and the most important Dutch jazz prize, the Boy Edgar Prijs.
