Oberndorf off to Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, etc. etc. Al Oberndorf, irrepressible Business Management instructor, whose last appearance in the Informer was in a photo taken on the Great Wall of China, is off to Southeast Asia again. Oberndorf leaves on July 12 for Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manilla, Brunei, Djarkarta, and, finally, China. During his first three months in Asia Oberndorf will be working on two separate projects. The first, a needs assessment for training of entrepreneurs, is a three week assignment for CIDA. Following that he will be working on the CANASEAN project, a program funded by the provincial government (through the "Excellence" fund), which he has been involved with for some time. The purpose of this project is to set up a training program between B.C. and the ASEAN nations (Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brunei) where businesspeople can get a thorough knowledge of international business opportunities in the Pacific Rim. CHINESE STUDENTS AT CAP While one small piece of North Vancouver will be visiting in China, Cap College has two representatives of China right here in North Van. Two Chinese students are enrolled in the Business Management ten month accelerated program which started last week. The two women, Qi Lou and Gang Zhoun, will be here studying through the fall and spring semester. They are not, however, our first Chinese students--Helen Zheng was sponsored by Frances Brownell last year and took. academic courses in the fall and spring. We welcome Qi Lou and Gang Zhoun to Capilano and hope that they will enjoy their stay. info Services shutdown looms Information Services will be closed for the last two weeks of July. If you want ads placed during that period or require any other Information Services services, make your arrangements with Donna ahead of time. My last day on deck is July 18. Assuming that he survives those first three months, during which he visits al] the ASEAN nations twice (Oberndorf says that his travel agent estimates that those trips will total around 40,000 kilometers), Oberndorf will be off to China to teach once again at the Canada/China Enterprise Management Training Centre in Shengdu where he taught for four months last summer. He will be thre all fall, returning to Cap in time for the Spring semester. Although he is looking forward to going back to Shengdu, Oberndorf admits to viewing his upcoming trip with some trepidation. "It will be a lot of work to do three different projects in such a short period," he said. Although he plans to take a couple of days to visit Panang, there is not much time for vacation in his schedule, so he may even find returning to Cap to be a relatively restful experience! COLOPHON The Informer is published sporadically, but with high hopes of weekliness, by Information Services, A118 or local 323 and 324. Submissions are more than welcome. Photos are generally the work of Dave Sharrock and Edna Sakata in MPC, printing is done by Linda Givens and Dave Callow in the Print Shop, and the distribution is handled by the denizens of the Switchboard and Typing Pool.
