(= Capilano Ce College Informer Healthstyles December Ist is World AIDS Day A recent International AIDS conference held in Vancouver informed participants of some startling statistics. AIDS continues to spread world wide at an alarming rate. The World Health Organization estimates a cumulative total of 19.5 million HIV infected people as of January 1993. This includes 10.2 million men, 8.1 million women and 1.2 children. The projected cumulative total for 1996 is 28 million and of these, 7.7 million will have developed AIDS. Canada has reported 8,200 AIDS cases and over 5,500 deaths from the disease. These numbers rank sixth among industrialized nations and third among the G7 nations. B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Quebec ac- count for 95 per cent of all AIDS cases in Canada. In B.C. a total of 1,518 cases of AIDS have been reported, but an estimate of those who are HIV infected is probably closer to 6,000 people. In Vancouver during the past five years HIV/AIDS has become the leading cause of premature mortality in males, ex- ceeding accidental deaths, heart disease and malignancies. People who have AIDS today were infected eight to 11 years ago. By the year 2000 the annual number of new AIDS cases worldwide will probably be split 50/50 among men and women. To mark World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, an AIDS information session is planned featuring videos, brochures and information. The session will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the B Building, in the southwest hallway near the cafeteria.
