January 29/99 A celebration of Robert Bagshaw’s 28 years of service at Capilano College will be held on Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Imperial Chinese Seafood Restaurant in Vancouver. Bob plans on retiring from the College at the end of January. Anyone interested in attending should call Alison Bailey in the Asia Pacific Management Cooperative Program, local 4981, by Friday, January 29. Tickets are $50 per person. A portion of the funds will go towards the creation of a Robert Bagshaw endowment fund for APMCP students. Maelle Ricker, daughter of Biology instructor, Nancy Ricker, is making a deep impression in the snowboarding world. She won a gold medal on Sunday, December 13 at the FIS Snowboard World Cup at Blackcomb. Maelle, a halfpipe specialist, won the 500 metre snowboard-cross. This discipline has four riders competing head to head and combines the speed of giant slalom, the jumps of halfpipe and the competitive dynamic of parallel slalom. Wow! Well done Maelle. First Nations Liaison officer, Darell Gaddie, recently graduated from City University in Washington State with a Master of Business Administration. Congratulations Darell! Lynn Jest, director of Continuing Education, was named to the board of the Leadership and Management Development Council of B.C. The LMDC promotes the development of leadership and management capabilities among small and medium-sized businesses in B.C. Bob Sherrin, member of the Capilano College English PEOPLE Department and editor of The Capilano Review, will exhibit his first work of combined sculpture and photo/text in Toronto in February. Camouflage is a triptych of military shirts stiffened into three gestures (salute, surrender, at ease) combined with a lectern which displays photos and memo-like texts that relate to the shirts. The piece will form part of the exhibition Fatherlands, which brings together work by a variety of artists who have focused on the effect of World War II on their fathers. Bob will travel to Toronto in early February to install his piece at Gallery 44 and attend the opening of the exhibition. Dr. Mona Lee, MD, has joined Health Services and will be available on Tuesday mornings. Dr. Lee has been active in family and emergency room practice and works with the Fraser Valley Mental Health Support Team, providing psychiatric services to teens and adults. She enjoys wellness counselling, psychiatry, youth medicine and cross-cultural and women’s health concerns. Diana Artuso, MVP in the women’s Canadian soccer championship won by Capilano College last year, has made the short list for College Athlete of the Year. Diana is one of three vying for this prestigious award. The winner will be announced March 10. Good luck, Diana! Gail Keary has joined Capilano College as director of International Projects. Gail has spent the past nine years with the Canadian International College where she worked first as the dean of Student Services and Education Services and then as the director of International Partnership Programs. Prior to that, Gail worked at Capilano College in the Social Sciences, Business Administration and Student Gail Keary Services departments. She will work with John Potts, dean of business, Human Services and International Programs, to initiate, develop and implement international projects and training based in Canada and abroad. Together, Gail and John will be working to further internationalize the College and its programs. CANASEAN will continue with Gail in charge of its overall operation and future development.
