Instructor on Fellowship to Asia As the Fall term gets underway as usual at Capilano College, one Cap instructor is beginning the term in a very different setting. Jim Bizzocchi of the Media Resources Department is spending September in Asia, thanks to the Commonwealth of Learning. The organization, in cooperation with the B.C. government, has been running a successful fellowship program. The program has been bringing 10 educators from developing countries each year to B.C. to study educational institutions involved in distance education. This year, the B.C. government expanded the program to allow B.C. personnel to visit institutions in developing countries throughout the Commonwealth. The object is for the fellowship winners to provide advice in educational areas, with an emphasis on distance education. The fellowships range from three weeks to one month. One of this year’s fellowships went to Jim. In August he left for Pakistan to advise educators on the use of audio-visual aids and other technologies in distance education. While in Asia, Jim is also travelling to Sri Lanka to do a needs analysis in the audio- visual field for the Open University there. In all, eight fellowships have been awarded from nearly 50 applications from 19 B.C. educational institutions and the ‘Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology. The awards were granted on the basis of professional matches between potential fellows and on the hosting institutions’ needs. The selection process involved a committee of B.C. educators, Ministry personnel and COL staff. The Informer will carry more news on Jim’s trip after his retum . Jolene Bordewick, Adult Special Education Coordinator, attended the International Association of Special Education Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in May. The conference drew together 250 participants from 20 countries. Summing up the proceedings; Jolene writes: “The Conference theme, Building Relevant Practices Around the World, allowed a range of provocative ideas to emerge, and offered an international forum for the exchange of information and materials, as well as a chance to share new approaches to the practice of special education from early childhood to employment and community integration.” She relays her thanks to Frank Gellin, John Waters and the Academic DAC for helping to defray some of the costs. Dave Brewer, Director of Supply and Services, would like to announce the following new appointments: Jo Dunlop, Senior Buyer Robert McKee, Buyer On behalf of the College Community, Dave would like to congratulate Jo and Robert on their new positions and wish them every success in their new endeavors. Library assistant Pat Pope retired this summer after 20 years at Cap. Many people turned up for her retirement party June 27 at the B Building, but the power was turned off, so the party moved to the H Building’s faculty lounge. “There was wine, but nobody was drinking it. It was one of the hottest days of the year, so everybody had lots of iced tea. We had a good time talking about when Pat used to work in the portables in West Vancouver,” said co-worker Karen Waugh. “Pat decided to get healthier during her retirement. She’s now busy pumping iron.” Music instructor Arlene McIntyre is proud to announce that her student Keitha Fishwick came in as senior voice runner-up in the Canadian Music Festival Competition held recently in North Vancouver. In the spring Keitha had won the Clef Society Scholarship for Outstanding Performer and the senior voice category of the Coquitlam Festival. If Robert McKee gets his way, the Sand Caps volleyball team will go on to be hot contenders. The team, hastily put together for this year’s Vancouver Sea Festival, came in 11th out of 30. “That’s pretty good,” said Robert. “It was absolutely the greatest thing we’ve done in a long time. It’s worth getting into serious training.” On the first day of competition the team rose quickly through the ranks, but during the championship July 21 it lost ground to some tough competitors, the 86th Street Goon Squad. “We want a rematch,” Robert said. Team members were: Sarah Dunlop, Jo Dunlop’s (Purchasing) daughter Joe Iacobellis (Sportsplex) Jennifer Lidster (Sportsplex) Greg Sharpe (retired as Advising Centre Coordinator in May, but sharpe as ever as a volleyball star) Patty Wiesner (Stores) Robert McKee (Purchasing) spare: Tracy Cameron, Patty Wiesner’s sister Telephone Tag in PR: Judi Fletcher and Elizabeth Rains have switched telephone locals.
