Electro-acoustic tribal sounds in the tradition of the 21st Century.
Lunar Adventures is a Vancouver quartet that draws its music from
influences as· diverse as the harmolodic explorations of Ornette
Coleman, ancient Mayan folk music, traditional Scottish reels, and
urban funk. Lunar recently played New York City's Knitting Factory.

Hailed by critics as a guitarist to watch, Ron Samworth is a talented
and versatile musician. He is a member of C_reatures of Habit,
winners of the 1990 CBC/Alcan national jazz competition, of Lunar
Adventures, one of Canada's leading contemporary quartets, and
leader of his own groups.

- - - COLLEEN SAVAGE WITH CHRIS SIGERSON TRIO

Virtuoso Brazilian guitarist/singer/percussionist Celso Machado
made his first visit to Vancouver tor the 1986 Jazz Festival. Celso
has become a perennial favourite, returning to the Festival every
year. His effervescent personality and infectious love of performing
always capture the hearts of his audiences.

Vocalist Colleen Savage grew up listening to Sarah Vaughan , Ray
Charles, Dinah Washington and Stevie Wonder. Their influences
can be heard in her music; her repertoire ranges from swinging jazz
to rhythm and blues.

- - - - - - - - FRASER MACPHERSON QUARTET

A quintet of Vancouver's best led by guitarist Schachte, playing
original compositions inspired by Steps Ahead and Dave Holland.
Schachte was singled out as a Canadian player deserving wider
recognition in Down Beat 's 1990 jazz festival review.

Canada's jazz ambassador, saxophonist Fraser MacPherson has
toured the Soviet Union and was recently awarded the Order of
Canada. His warm tenor sound and swinging feel have won him
critical acclaim tor many years , and he has numerous records on
the Concord and Justin Time labels.

Vancouver vocalist Jennifer Scott has what it takes; a pure and
beautiful sound, talent and "jazz ears". Performing her own originals, compositions by other group members, and jazz standards this concert will be a treat.

- - - - - - - - - - ALAN MATHESON QU INTET

Pianist and trumpeter Alan Matheson is a busy man. In addition to
teaching at the VCC School of Music, he is a member of the awardwinning Fifth Avenue , and writes and arranges tor that group and
his own. This concert features many of his own compositions.

- - - - - - - - - - - - ROBIN SHIER QUINTET

Tight, well-executed contemporary mainstream jazz. Leader/trumpeter Robin Shier uses this group as a vehicle for his considerable
talents as a composer. Other members are among the cream of the
Vancouver scene.

- - - - - B o s MURPHY/PATRIC CAIRD QUARTET

Playing original material and selected standards in the contemporary mainstream tradition, tour of Vancouver's best. Pianist Bob
Murphy and saxophonist Patric Caird co-lead this exciting group.

- - - -- - - - - - - - - - - KK NOGUEIRA
This talented Brazilian guitarist and vocalist now resides in Vancouver. His renditions of classic Brazilian music enthrall his audiences.
- - - - - - - - - - - DAVID PHYALL QUINTET

Composer/guitarist and synth guitarist David Phyall has assembled this quintet to play his interactive jazz/new music. Several of
the players are avid students of world music, as well as synthesizer
technology.

Originally from Australia and settled in Vancouver, guitarist Piper
has dedicated years to travelling and studying traditional Brazilian
guitar. His renditions of classic Brazilian tunes are sensitive and
very authentic.

On the edge of major international recognition, Vancouver pianist
Plimley has studied with Cecil Taylor and played with Andrew
Cyrille. His playing pays tribute to Cecil, but his rhythmic approach

The great Canadian drummer Claude Ranger is legendary across
the country, a collaborator with musicians like Don Thompson and
Dave Liebman, a brilliant drummer whose roster of saxophonists

most stellar names in our national jazz community.

Alto saxophonist Styffe received special mention as a Canadian

1990 festival. His original music is largely inspired by the classic
quartet of Ornette Coleman .

Young Vancouver musician Ross Taggart is a double threat on
piano and tenor saxophone. Taggart is a member of two very
successful Canadian groups-the internationally acclaimed Hugh
Fraser Quintet, and Creatures of Habit, winners of the 1990 CBC/
Alcan National Jazz Competition.

Vocalist Sibel Thrasher is familiar to Vancouver audiences as a
cast memeber of the long running and successful show Ain't
Misbehavin '. She is a popular entertainer on the small club scene
as well, and performs a repertoire that swings easily from R&B to
jazz standards.

Cabaret at the Pacific National Exhibition.
Following closely on the heels of the hugely successful du Maurier Ltd . International Jazz Festival
Vancouver (June 21 - July 1, 1991) the du Maurier
Ltd. Jazz Cabaret continues the tradition established by the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society in
1985 of bringing world class jazz to Vancouver.
Today, the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society is
recognized locally, nationally and internationally for
its active role in shaping the jazz scene, not only in
Vancouver but in Canada itself.
During the 18-day Exhibition we 'll be featuring
some remarkable music-54 performances in allwith bands that include many of Canada's leading
jazz artists. Increasingly, this country has been
playing a significant role in the world music scene
and we 're proud of our commitment to presenting
the best known Canadian talent as well as younger
and lesser known emerging artists. Ultimately the
goal is to develop jazz music and all its wonderful
permutations locally, nationally and internationally.
Toward this end Coastal Jazz and Blues Society
presents world-calibre concerts year round , publishes a bi-monthly newsletter "Looking Ahead" ,
provides a 24-hour jazz listings service through its
Jazz Hotline (682-0706) and works with other jazz
organizations across the country to develop artistic

great singers like Peggy Lee and June Christie. Accompanied by
guitarist Henry Young who has played with Nina Simone.

Pam Henry has garnered critical acclaim across Canada and Eu rope. An experienced songwriter, Pam's first single, Someone Like
You , was a hit on the German , Austrian , and Italian charts.

"Sensational! One of the best flamenco guitarists anywhere!" Seattle Times. American-born flamenco guitarist Alcala is one of
the very few foreigners to be respected as a a full fledged flamenco
artist by the gypsy flamencos of Andalucia. Alcala plays with total
precision and passion.

Percussionist Baird's unique musical approach has been fostered
by a long apprenticeship in the New York creative music scene of
the 1970s as well as by studies in Asia. Paul Blaney bass, Paul
Plimley piano, and Daniel Kane saxophones are three of the most
talented improvisers in Canada.

Drummer Al Wiertz has worked with jazz legends John Handy and
Lenny Breau. This quartet, Wiertz' latest project, plays inside and
out with ease. Dynamic and provocative music with passion to

BETWEEN THE LINES

A hot new jazz quartet on the Vancouver scene , Between The
Lines explores the realm of mainstream jazz with a contemporary
edge. The four members, drummer/composer Bruce Nielsen ,
Ross Taggart piano, Rick Kilburn bass and Bill Runge saxophone,
play with hard edged intensity.

Miles Black arrived on the Vancouver scene a few years ago, and
hasn 't stopped working since. A member of Skywalk, this talented
pianist has also performed and toured with Ann Mortifee and Paul
Horn. He appears regularly around town as an accompanist and
with his own groups.

Brass Roots, formed in 1987 by Vancouver bass trombonist/
sousaphonist Brad Muirhead , is an exciting nine-piece modern
jazz collective built on the tradition of New Orleans carnival bands.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band , Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy , and
funk bands like Tower of Power have been main influences for the
group. Their repertoire spans the entire jazz tradition , from early
dixieland through swing, bebop, and avant garde.

A fresh , provocative Vancouver quartet. Their group sensibility

Bruce Freedman , well known to Vancouver audiences as a tenor
player with his group Chief Feature, plays alto saxophone in this

Recognized as one of Canada's finest players in the classic jazz
tradition , guitarist Gannon has toured the USSR with saxophonist
Fraser MacPherson , and is regularly featured at Vancouver's

With their recent independent cassette release , Hats Alive!, and a
just completed tour of Canada, Garbo's Hat is on a roll. This unique
Vancouver trio finds a challenge in their unusual instrumentation
(voice, bass and saxophone) , and performs both original music
and jazz standards.

Virtuoso clarinetist and composer Franc;:ois Houle has become an
essential member of Vancouver's creative music scene. His multitextured jazz/new music compositions for his sextet are inspired by
the music and two-horn front-line of Steve Lacy's sextet. His work
encompasses a wide range of musical possibilities , from di xieland to
contemporary music.

Vancouver guitarist Daryl Jahnke has just returned from a year in
Tokyo. While in Japan, he recorded a national radio broadcast with
the Paul Jackson Band and appeared with jazz trumpeter Terumasa
Hino's group on national television. Jahnke's fluid style is reminiscent of jazz great Pat Metheny.

One of Vancouver's hottest properties, the Gangsters of Swing are
back! The music of Louis Jordan and the sounds of the big bands are

Ron Johnston is ubiquitous on Vancouver's jazz scene, backing up
our many talented performers. A very talented and versatile pianist,

The name says it all about this Vancouver quartet. Hard-blowing
free-bop , original compositions, and tunes by Dewey Redman ,
Blood Ulmer, and Thelonious Monk. Saxophonist Kane on tenor and
baritone blows like George Adams and Albert Ayler rolled into one.
His ferocious energy is matched by the steamrolling Stan Taylor on
drums.

Pianist Linton Garner has enjoyed a long , successful and varied
career, stretching from his early days with Fletcher Henderson's
jazz band through a major stint with the great Billy Eckstine and
working as an accompanist for R&B greats Smokey Robinson,
Della Reese and Ruth Brown. Garner is now steadily employed at
Vancouver's The Three Greenhorns.

For the past twelve years, pianistlcomposerl bandleader Kidd 's love
of Salsa and African rhythms has led her to work with Vancouver's
finest Latin and African drummers. Key influences are Manu Dibango ,
Eddie Palmieri , and McCoy Tyner. A seamless integration of these
various influences , an infectious music that's irresistible.
- - - - - - - - DANIEL LAPP/GLEN HALLS Duo

Guitarist Guild has been a mainstay on the Vancouver scene for
some years. He ·plays jazz guitar in the tradition of Herb Ellis and
Wes Montgomery with a beautiful sound and swinging feel.

Fusing elements of world folk music and jazz with modern
compositional techniques , trumpeter/fiddler/vocalist Lapp and pianist Halls play loosely structured improvisations that are thoughtful
and interactive. Halls' colourful piano technique and Lapp 's earthy,
soulful , lyrical approach create a unique musical experience.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LOOSE GYPSIES

The Globe and Mail calls vocalist Kate Hammett-Vaughan "an
important Canadian jazz voice". Performing jazz standards in an
swinging and contemporary style , she is one of the West Coast's
premier jazz vocalists. Kate is also a member of the acclaimed jazz
trio Garbo's Hat.

This energetic quartet from Victoria plays acoustic music from the
1920s to now. From the music of Re inhardt and Grappelli through
traditional fiddle music, Western Swing , and Appalachian folk tunes
to contemporary originals and jazz improvisations. Toe-tapping ,
good-time music with a difference.
