Lunar Adventures is a Vancouver quartet that draws its music from influences as· diverse as the harmolodic explorations of Ornette Coleman, ancient Mayan folk music, traditional Scottish reels, and urban funk. Lunar recently played New York City's Knitting Factory. Hailed by critics as a guitarist to watch, Ron Samworth is a talented and versatile musician. He is a member of C_reatures of Habit, winners of the 1990 CBC/Alcan national jazz competition, of Lunar Adventures, one of Canada's leading contemporary quartets, and leader of his own groups. - - - - - - - - - - - - - CELSO MACHADO - - - COLLEEN SAVAGE WITH CHRIS SIGERSON TRIO Virtuoso Brazilian guitarist/singer/percussionist Celso Machado made his first visit to Vancouver tor the 1986 Jazz Festival. Celso has become a perennial favourite, returning to the Festival every year. His effervescent personality and infectious love of performing always capture the hearts of his audiences. Vocalist Colleen Savage grew up listening to Sarah Vaughan , Ray Charles, Dinah Washington and Stevie Wonder. Their influences can be heard in her music; her repertoire ranges from swinging jazz to rhythm and blues. - - - - - - - - - - BUDGE SCHACHTE QUINTET - - - - - - - - FRASER MACPHERSON QUARTET A quintet of Vancouver's best led by guitarist Schachte, playing original compositions inspired by Steps Ahead and Dave Holland. Schachte was singled out as a Canadian player deserving wider recognition in Down Beat 's 1990 jazz festival review. Canada's jazz ambassador, saxophonist Fraser MacPherson has toured the Soviet Union and was recently awarded the Order of Canada. His warm tenor sound and swinging feel have won him critical acclaim tor many years , and he has numerous records on the Concord and Justin Time labels. - - - - - - - - - - - JENNIFER ScoTT QUINTET Vancouver vocalist Jennifer Scott has what it takes; a pure and beautiful sound, talent and "jazz ears". Performing her own originals, compositions by other group members, and jazz standards this concert will be a treat. - - - - - - - - - - ALAN MATHESON QU INTET Pianist and trumpeter Alan Matheson is a busy man. In addition to teaching at the VCC School of Music, he is a member of the awardwinning Fifth Avenue , and writes and arranges tor that group and his own. This concert features many of his own compositions. - - - - - - - - - - - - ROBIN SHIER QUINTET Tight, well-executed contemporary mainstream jazz. Leader/trumpeter Robin Shier uses this group as a vehicle for his considerable talents as a composer. Other members are among the cream of the Vancouver scene. - - - - - B o s MURPHY/PATRIC CAIRD QUARTET Playing original material and selected standards in the contemporary mainstream tradition, tour of Vancouver's best. Pianist Bob Murphy and saxophonist Patric Caird co-lead this exciting group. - - - - - - - - - - - JACK STAFFORD QUARTET - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - KK NOGUEIRA This talented Brazilian guitarist and vocalist now resides in Vancouver. His renditions of classic Brazilian music enthrall his audiences. - - - - - - - - - - - DAVID PHYALL QUINTET Composer/guitarist and synth guitarist David Phyall has assembled this quintet to play his interactive jazz/new music. Several of the players are avid students of world music, as well as synthesizer technology.
