THE INFORMER PAGE 3 DECEMBER 1, 1989 Sex, Drugs, Food, and Colleges Last week, these things went together. Besides the strike, it was B.C. Colleges and Institutes Week, Drug Awareness Week, AIDS Awareness Week, and Nutrition Week. (Is it any wonder the lines went up when they did?) However, for those who would like to know what they missed, the Student Society (and Health Services) have a variety of pamphlets about AIDS, and the Society plans to hold their AIDS information week with workshops and panel discussions late in January. A questionnaire about drug dependency called “The TRY Test” is published in pamphlet form and is also available in Health Services. Some probing questions include: Do you find yourself drinking alone more often? and Are your preferred friends heavy drinkers? If these are disturbing questions, Susan Mitchell in Counselling is the person to talk to. The entire TRY test was published in the most recent issue of the Courier. Nutrition information is available in a small card titled “ActiveAte” at Beaver foods. Learn the tiresome facts about how many calories it takes to burn off various kinds of food. Welcome back. Don't miss the last perfomances of The Dog Ate the Ring. Cap Theatre (R105) 8 p.m. December 1 and 2. Call 2428 for reservations. Academic Cruising Travel Study 1990, The Post A.C.S. The Bureau is run by volunteer help. They distribute food certificates, food hampers, and good used clothing, and run a toy shop where clients may shop free for their children. Clients are recommended by the Ministry of Human Resources. Call 984-9627 if you have money or clothes to donate, and call the toy shop at 984-8697 if you have toys. Clay and Textile Tour There was a lineup outside the All-college lounge Thursday morning as anxious shoppers waited for the doors to open on the annual Christmas Craft Sale. Funds from the sale go towards the students’ annual trip to San Francisco. In May this year, 23 Clay and Textile students and faculty visited Esprit headquarters to view that company’s collection of 300 Amish quilts; they stopped by a small textile firm, Zoo Ink, to watch the hand-printing process, and visited Sheila O’Hara, a nationally recognized weaver who creates her designs by computer. Students enjoyed a tour of Michael Swenson’s studio where he creates enormous bowls and urns in many hues through a process called Saggar firing. Using wood, copper, and other minerals in an oxygen-deprived atmosphere, the artist colours the pots soft hues of grey, rose, tan, turquoise, mauve, and green.
