(em Capilano Cem College Informer Vol. XIV No. 14 Nov. 18/92 Institution of First Choice * Dedicated to Excellence * Leader in Education Club Optima returned to Capilano College this fall, giving top high school students a good look at the College and a chance to exercise their talents. “We had over 200 secondary students from throughout South- western B.C. competing in 15 areas from athletics to theatre,” said David DeMuynck, who coordi- nated Club Optima ’92. “This is an opportunity to get a sense and a feel for Capilano College,” College President Doug Jardine told the students in the Sportsplex before the competitions started. Although the competitions would be fun, he said, students planning to attend Cap should realize post- secondary education is serious business. “They must put out a 110 per cent effort.” In return, students get an excel- Students from Seycove and Tupper ply their skills at the Computing Science competition. The staff does a tremendous job and the faculty “will cause you to push the envelope of your intellectual experi- ence,” Doug said. The students left the Sportsplex in teams, each ready to ~ tackle a particular test. The competitions, designed by faculty from various depart- ' ments, included everything from identifying inverte- brates in Biology to acting _ out a skit in French. In ~ addition, a group of stu- _ dents witnessed a demon- _ stration of Applied Informa- tion Technology. Everyone had gathered in the Sportsplex for the Oct. 29 opening ceremonies, lunch and awards presenta- tion. Hosts were Marleen Morris, Director of Public Relations, and Dave O'Leary, Supervisor of the Advising Centre. Rob Turner, Vice-President, Student and Instructional Services, helped hand out awards along with Clay St. Thomas, on-air personality from Z-95 FM. Second-place winners received certificates.
