Soloman legend forms basis for Brecht play PLOT SYNOPSIS: Based on an Eastern version of the Solomon Legend, this play brings to the stage Brecht's own ironic vision of jusitce and ownership. Who is the most fit—the natural mother who has deserted her child or the servant girl, Grusha, who has sacrificed her own safety and freedom to care for the child since she found him abandoned? Set against a background of war and revolution in the Caucasus in 900B.C., the play traces Grusha's flight into the northern mountains pursued by the Ironshirts who seek the heir to the Abashwilli Estates, her quest for refuge, and the loss of a lover. Eventually, circumstances overtake her and she finds herself at the mercy of one of the truly great characters of dramatic literature— Azdack, the eccentric and lusty "judge- by-accident"—who must solve her case.
