CELLARLIVE www.cellarlive.com the finest in live jazz recordings CD Release January 2006 January, 2006: CELLARLIVEreleases UP DOWN DOWN UP by the Coat Cooke Trio. The Trio, established two years ago as a vehicle for ensemble improvisation, played a regular Monday night gig at the Cellar through 2005 - the music on this CD was recorded over three of these Mondays. We hope you enjoy the music. Here is a sample of the critics' response: 'The first thing to jump out at the ears on this phenomenal trio session from NOW Orchestra leader Coat Cooke is the crispness and clarity of the saxophonist's longtime collaborator Clyde Reed. Captured alone, the acoustic bass can be a bellwether for how a jazz album was made, whether it was overproduced or muddily underdone. Here the mix is perfect, in the moment, and woody and broad simultaneously. As for Cooke, he blows like Sonny Rollins, with a range that makes the actual parts of his horn audible, the clicks and hoarse corners where sound comes out. "Flow,"aptly named, is a great indication: He rumbles in approaching the melody from every angle as drummer Kenton Loewen clatters and clambers, and then Cooke settles in around the 2-minute mark for some late-night, groove-riding mellowness. It's his sense of fluidity, of the places where collective improvisation can bust out of the energy blast and find the pace and feel of a cool stroll that help make this live set so fantastic. Of course it's also the intense combination of elements here that cut deep into the headphones-Cooke's mercurial wayward blowing heating up and blasting out and his trio's utter togetherness at all times. Catch Cooke's work here.' Andrew Bartlett, Coda Magazine 'Saxophonist Cooke's commanding presence is matched at times by the polyrhythmic activity of drummer Kenton Loewen, but at not time does it enter into the aggressive, outside realms these three are known for. Never hasty, the nine tunes from three Monday night sets at the Cellar will appeal to a wide audience. A very fine disc.' Stuart Derdeyn, The Vancouver Province 'The interesting thing about jazz is that some of its finer moments come as music that is almost impossible to reproduce as a result of the originators' style and the sophistication of the band interplay. On listening to this trio, I was immediately struck by a deja vu of my favourite Sonny Rollins recordings. While Coat Cooke, Clyde Reed and Kenton Loewen are playing something that can be fixed in a time gone by, the similarity ends there. The drums, bass and tenor sax dance around each other in way that is quite amazing for the form that has now become "jazz.,, The inventiveness and clear communication rarely, if ever, let up and each player's individuality stays intact and present with every turn in the musical path. I have not listened to a work of "jazz" with this kind of sheer inventiveness in a long while.
