Soccer player goes international First year Science student Rick Celebrini, who is a member of the Blues Soccer team, recently received national attention when he was awarded the Most Valuable Player designation for his performance on the Canadian National Team (Under 19) West in the University of Victoria Invitational Tournament. "This is an outstanding feat if © we consider that Rick is only 18 years old and was playing against senior university players," said Coach Joe Iacobellis. "Rick has a bright future ahead of him, according to National Team Coach, Tony Taylor," said Iacobellis. He will be extremely busy this spring and summer preparing for a tour with the national team, and he has an excellent opportunity to play for Canada in the Under 19 World Cup Championships which Canada has qualified for this fall inSantiago, Chile. In addition to his athletic achievements, Rick is a first class student who is looking forward to entering the School of Rehabilitation Medicine at UBC. Teams both finish fifth Fifth in Canada is a popular spot on campus these days, as both the Women's Volleyball and Basketball teams finished in that position after the National championships. The Women's Basketball team, which came in first in the Totem Conference, went to Mohawk College in Ontario for the finals. A little nervous under the pressure of the nationals, they lost their first game to Quebec, won the second vs Saskatchewan, lost in the third to their host from Hamilton, Ontario, and then beat a team from Toronto in the last game. Glenda Knight from the Blues put in a particularly strong performance. The tournament was won by John Abbott College, after a battle for first between two Quebec colleges. In Red Deer, Alberta, the Volleyball team did better than had been expected in placing fifth, as they came in second this year in the Totem Conference. The highlight of the championship for the Blues was defeating Vancouver Community College who had beaten themin the Totem championships. Excellent performances were put in by Tara Loo, centre blocker and Marieanne Nickel, setter. Coach Joe Iacobellis is looking forward to next year for even better results.
