November 15/96 Capilano College Singers silhouette Notre Dame Cathedral. A Busy Schedule Provides Great Music for Canadians Ce College Singers had an exciting April and May in 1996 and the spring of 1997 is shaping up to be very interesting as well. Last April, Capilano College Singers were the showcase choir for Festival Nelson. There they performed for an audience of more than 1,500 people comprised of more than 1,000 students from Washington and B.C., plus 500 local residents. The day after the concert, we gave a morning workshop for a Washington choir. In May, the choir spent three days in Montreal where it performed in the massive St. Joseph’s Oratory and opulent Notre Dame Cathedral. The main reason for this week long trip was an invitation to perform at the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors’ biennial symposium, which was held in Quebec City. We gave a concert for more than 500 choral conductors from across the country and were the workshop choir for the famous choral directors Paul Hillier and Nicole Paiement. We also sang in Canada’s oldest stone church in the Mount Royal District of Old Quebec City. This was truly a wonderful experience for our College choir. On Friday, December 6, and Sunday, December 8, the Capilano College Singers, Capilano College Community Choir and Cecilia Ensemble will give their annual Choirs, Brass and Organ concert at St. Andrew’s United Church in North Vancouver. This festive concert will feature many of the great Christmas classics of the past and many Canadian works as well. And yes, there will be sing-along carols! In the last week of January, Capilano College singers will make a five-day tour to Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kelowna, and Penticton. The choir will give school workshops/concerts, a concert at Okanagan University College, and a B.C. Choral Federation workshop/ concert in Penticton. On March 7, Capilano College Singers will give its third annual concert in Squamish as guest artist for the Howe Sound Performing Arts Society. On April 6 at 3 p.m., Capilano College Community Choir, Capilano College Singers and Cecilia Ensemble will give an exciting concert at the Centennial Theatre. The major works to be featured are the delightful Schubert Mass in C (we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert’s birth in 1997) and dramatic “Lord Nelson Mass” by Joseph Haydn for choirs, soloist and orchestra. We hope you will have an opportunity to attend at least one of our upcoming concerts!
