Idle Eyes have gelled into a band whose depth only now is revealing itself. "The new album has a lot of different feels," says Tad Campbell. "I believe that it doesn't matter whether or not it has an Idle Eyes 'sound', but rather whether it has good songs. "Love's Imperfection" is a tribute to Tad's songwriting abilities and his commitment to continually grow and adapt. Songs such as "Sandra Doesn't Live Here Anymore", "In Your Room" and "Power Game" underline the band's successful amalgamation of aggressive drive and subtle, intricate rhythms. Idle Eyes have just completed a number of eastern dates with Human League and have been very well received throughout the tour. Skywalk 1986 saw the release of the much acclaimed "Bohemians" album and twelve total nominations in this year's Tribute is but a portion of its success. Internationally, "The Bohemians" hit number 6 in Billboard's year end Jazz Chart. They accomplished 2 major U.S. tours and are now attempting to develop the same devoted market in Canada. The members of the band have all been nominated in their particular instrumental categories, and if this is any indication, we know the 3rd album (currently in the working stages) is bound to be best yet. In 1987, Skywalk plans to spend a good part of the year on the road. Listen up Canada! --------------------------------17 Colin James Poisoned "Hook, Line & Single" is an appropriate name for a guy like Colin who grabs out and makes you and the likes of Stevie Ray stand up and listen. Capturing Kudos coast to coast, Colin can be said to be riding a steamroller of airplay attention and audience appreciation. The 1000 pressings sold out immediately but this situation will be readily rectified by the announcement of a new record contract in the near future. Coming up, Colin James embarks on a major Canadian tour that'll carry him through the spring and summer months. 1986 found Art Bergmann and Poisoned tooling through the countryside on an East to West Canadian Tour. In September, they recorded their current demo featuring "My Empty House", "To Tell The Truth", "Runaway Train" and "Blackhearts" with Paul Hyde producing and mixing by Bob Rock. In December, Poisoned released a limited edition of the demo and currently have an additional six songs in the can scheduled for a Spring '87 release. VEJI Herald Nix With the release of "Fugitive Kind", 1986 witnessed the first time Herald Nix ever left town. Now armed with bales of press clippings and well-versed on radio and t.v. due to the huge coverage received in Toronto, Herald Nix plans to go another round in '87. They are currently considering offers for a tour of Europe and hope to be back in the studio soon. Led by Hugh Fraser, the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation is an exciting 12 piece ensemble, which features Vancouver's most exciting jazz artists through Hugh's compositions. For the past 7 years, VEJI has been featured in concert at every major Canadian Jazz Festival including Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton, and has appeared in New York City. At these concerts, jazz greats Slide Hampton, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Sheila Jordan, Joe Henderson, and Dave Holland have all made guest appearances with VEJi. The band has released two albums, "VEJI" and recently, "Classic VEJI" on the Toronto Jazz Label from Bebop to Now. 22---------------------------------- 685-5513 689,157 ]l ... ~ I H I B A L L s 0 u R sp E C I A L T y G I R A F F E B A R s E R V I 24 ,_____F_U_L~_Y_M_O_B_ILE_ _ ___J l~~!!o~Zch~!~~~!?~! In the summer of '86 (opening for Luba) they added the EXPO Theatre to their list of venues. Shortly after this, they took time out to record ten tracks at the band's 8-track studio. It worked . Barney Bentall has just been signed to Bernie Finklestein, long-time manager of Bruce Cockburn. The future brings ... more songs, a new video and . . . ? Also nominated for Male Vocalist, Jim's live album, recorded at Harpo's in Victoria last year, is set for release within the next few weeks. In '86, Jim performed at EXPO in the Legends of Rock 'n Roll series with Ray Charles, and was the only Vancouver act on the bill. Jim spent his hiatus from Vancouver club gigs in Edinburgh, Scotland last summer, for 10 days of performances. Jim has penned a song, "An Introduction To The Blues" for the NBC mini-series "Hands Of A Stranger" airing May 17 and 18, and wrote two songs for a segment of HBO's "The Hitchhiker" last year, in which he also had a part. In the very near future, Jim, as actor, will be in Steven J. Cannell Productions' pilot "Wise Guys", to be shot partly in Vancouver, and if it goes to series he'll have a regular part. And, of course, Jim can be heard singing the praises of PetroCanada, 7-11 and the new Labatt's Blue jingles. Colin James Please see page 22. Al Foreman Please see page 21 . Emerald Express Emerald Express are John Reynolds and Dave Walker. Together they combine humour and various musical styles from Irish traditional right through to rock and roll. During the summer they played six nights per week to packed houses at the Unicorn pub. Since then , they continue to 'bring 'em in ' at the Unicorn and have just started work on their album " Live At The Unicorn". Recently they've been making a name for themselves playing to packed houses at UBC as well as on the Convention circuit. ---------------------------------33 Nancy Nash Lori Paul Nancy's exceptional vocals can currently be heard on both Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" and Loverboy's "Heaven In Your Eyes" (from the "Top Gun" soundtrack). The live highlight of '86 for Nancy was her performance of the EXPO theme song at the closing ceremonies, attended by 60,000 people. In mid-April, she is releasing a 12" single entitled "To Give Our Love", which she wrote with Graeme Coleman, and which was produced by Bob Rock, Pat Glover and herself. The single is a tribute to native Indians, and will set an historic music precedent as it's the first time that sacred native music has been adapted to pop/rock. 1986 saw Lori on two "Downtown Saturday Night" TV shows: one with Science and one with Crooked Beat. She performed live back-ups with BB King, Tower of Power and The Arrows, and studio backups for Jim Foster ("X-Ray Eyes"), Kim Clarke ("It's A Grey Day") and Al Foreman ("In The Heart of Vancouver"). And during EXPO, Lori did two concert nights at the Plaza of Nations. Two of the several benefit gigs Lori worked in '86 were for the Variety Club (at Graceland) and Women In Rhythm & Rock for The United Way. She is now working with The Pride, whose repertoire is almost all original, doing jingles for KoKo Productions and more session work. I assist of the Year Mike Lent Brian Newcombe Mike spent much of last year in the recording studio performing with New York jazz artists Joanne Brackeen and Denny Wallis. He can also be heard on the Long John Baldry album (also nominated for independent album). He spent some time in San Francisco with Ferron and played locally with Shannon Gunn and other local jazz musicians. Up and coming are some live dates with Body Electric, Long John Baldry, Ferron, as well as the usual requests for jingles and session work. Brian's a freelance electric bass player who plays with a few groups on a specialty basis. 1986 was incredibly active with Brian playing the EXPO Opening Gala, the B.C. Day Celebration with David Foster and the V.S.O. and several B.C. Pavilion dates with Nancy Nash, Shari Ulrich, Boy Wonder, Wayne Kozak and Rachel Paiement. In Victoria, he was asked to join David Foster at the dinner for the celebrity baseball tournament (and looks forward to this again this year). Up and coming, Brian will be performing with Michael J. Fox at the upcoming Symphony concert and looks forward to more of the same for the rest of the year. Rachel Melas 1986 found Rachel touring with Animal Slaves across Canada and playing some U.S. dates, recording demos and playing lots of local appearances. This is Rachel's second nomination. Reid Barton (Alibi) Please see page 20. Rene Worst (Skywalk) Please see page 17. I Lee Oliphant Lee spent much of last year freelancing , doing jingles and session work and in the summer, he joined Chilliwack. He also joined Fred Penner in several television shows and concerts, an avenue which he plans to pursue by presenting his own band and guests at a benefit for street kids planned for April. ercussionist of the Year Jerry Adolphe Dennis Burke Jerry was kept busy last year playing a variety of jingles, country tunes, gospel music and various session work. He played on both the Body Electric and the Long John Baldry albums. Having joined Chilliwack he looks forward to more of the same. Amid completing his Fine Arts Degree (composition) at S.F.U., Dennis found time to perform with Doc Fingers, The Ron Johnson Trio and his own band, "The Coast Quartet". Now finished the film score for a production entitled "Lenz", Dennis is currently composing a score for "Determinations". This year, he hopes to play numerous festivals, dedicate himself to film work, and looks forward to a possible album. Daryl Burgess Spotlight '86 generated both interest and airplay and Daryl is now following it up. Currently writing with Jim Foster, Daryl plans to record and produce his new tunes on an album to be released later this year. Look for a big push in about four to five months. Jim McGillveray (Skywalk) Please see page 17. Chris Nordquist In 1986, Chris managed to play at least 3 EXPO venues, indoors, outdoors and semi-covered. Recently, he's just completed a cross-Canada tour with Bim and Connie Kaldor. In 1987? "I plan on playing lots of good music and having a baby!'' 38-------------------------------- I eed/Brass Player of the Year Phil Dwyer (VEJI) Tom Keenlyside (Skywalk) Please see page 22. Please see page 17. Mark Hasselbach Fraser MacPherson Well-known to Vancouver audiences as sideman (Powder Blues), session player (Long John Baldry, Jim Byrnes, et al), and advertising jingle performer, Mark has also received three Junos, several gold and platinum records, and the AMPEX Golden Reel Award (with Powder Blues), and has toured extensively in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Earlier this year, Mark's second major label album, . " Hasselblast", was released , and the music of Mark Hasselbach and his band, The Movers and Shakers, is a commingling of crossover jazz and contemporary R&B that appeals to a broad audience. Last year's highlight was the fourth tour in the Soviet Union for the Fraser MacPherson quartet, performing 25 concerts in 9 cities in one month. This month finds the quartet in Montreal to record an album on the Justin Time label, immediately followed by a Maritime tour. Kirsten Nash Kirsten's dedication is apparent when one considers the wide variety of people she shared the stage with in 1986, quite an accomplishment for one so new to the field. Again this year he performed with Mel Torme and John Dankworth when they guested with the VSO. "Heaven In Your Eyes", a single arranged for Corylynn Hanney reached #4 in the Adult Contemporary Can-Con charts. This year, Bill plans on follow-up work with Corylynn and continues in session work, jingles, albums and some television work. Graeme Coleman (Skywalk) Please see page 17. Ron Johnson Ron has spent the last year getting back to his original jazz roots. Current plans include re-forming with Ian McDougall and Oliver Gannon, as well as composing, performing and recording. Dave Pickell Dave "Pick" Pickell was last year's Tribute Nominee and continues as one of Vancouver's most indemand session players.
