(@ Capilano Ce College Informer FACULTY DEVELOPMENT ae Diane Blaney Spring Grant Applications Deadline April 8, 1994 - Grants are available to full- and part-time faculty who: > have a minimum of two years service; > are working a four section minimum in year of request; » have received no grant from Committee past twelve months. Grants up to a maximum of $1,000 are available for research, attendance at conferences and individual professional development activities which fall outside the regular articulation process. Grants are awarded through an adjudication process of the Faculty Development Committee three times a year: fall, spring and early summer. It is intended that the available funds be spread amongst as many people as possible, therefore, the Committee can rarely allocate more than partial funds to any distant travel request. Applications are evaluated against the following criteria: » degree of personal professional growth to the individual; > contribution to the discipline/career/vocational/area; > contribution to the College’s image; > contribution to classroom effectiveness. Faculty, Staff and Administrators Exchange The Community College Exchange Program offers you an opportunity to teach new courses, work in new administrative settings, learn new skills and establish new professional contacts. Within CCEP you have a great deal of flexibility in placements, exchange periods, and assignments which include exchange opportunities with federal government agencies and education associations. The exchange could be as long as one year or as short as several weeks. For a list and brief description of participating colleges, universities, agencies and associations, or to receive a copy of the application form, please contact me at 2364. The deadline to initiate your participation has been set at April 14, 1994. Instructional Skills Workshop ISW is an intensive 24-hour workshop for beginning or experienced instructors. The workshop is led BY college instructors FOR college instructors. Beginning instructors are exposed to presentation skills, curriculum design, lesson planning, evaluation techniques and classroom management. Experienced instructors have an opportunity to focus on new ideas and experiment with new techniques in a supportive environment. The next Instructional Skills Workshop is scheduled as part of Faculty Development Days during the second week of May 1994. The four days are May 9, 11, 12, and 13, 1993. Faculty Development Days May 18, 19, 24 and 26, 1994 The Committee has been working over the past several months in planning a series of workshops and seminars for this year’s Faculty Development Days. This years theme is Talking Together, Teaching Together and Thinking on Your Feet. May 18 is our first day and Mario Govorchin will be a feature guest and will conduct a workshop entitled "Techniques for Resolving Conflict and Dealing with Hostile Individuals". The workshop will deal with defusing hostility, anger management and conflict resolution. A panel of Capilano College colleagues will discuss the Capilano experience in the aftemoon and Mr. Govorchin will continue with us as facilitator. May _ 19 there will be two sessions. In the moming Jane Promnitz of BCIT’s Learning Resource Centre will conduct a workshop on "Cooperative Learning". In Cooperative Learning, students work in small groups to help each other learn. Student participants become more motivated to become involved in the leaming process as a result. In the afternoon there will be a panel of Capilano College faculty members discussing the merits of "Peer Coaching". May 25 and 26 the B. C. Library Association will be hosting a "Media Showcase" at Capilano College. The Faculty Development Committee has planned some related activities around this Showcase. May 24 there will be two workshops. In the moming there will be a workshop on Using Instructional Media led by Tom Childs and in the afternoon a workshop on Windows led by Riley O’Connor and Mary Ann Van Home. May 25 has been left unscheduled so that faculty who wish to view the exhibits at the Media Showcase will be able to attend. A fee on behalf of all instructors who wish to attend has been paid by your Faculty Development Committee. Presentation of your name tag, business card or library identification card is all that is necessary. May 26 we will wrap up our activities for this year by asking Annette Lorek and Maureen Whitney to do a hands-on "Navigating the Internet" workshop. With the exception of this day and May 25, lunch will be provided for all participants. International Faculty Development Seminars Information on this series of seminars can be obtained by calling me on 2364. Eleven seminars on various international topics are held on location at universities throughout the world from Berlin to Brazil, from Moscow to Zimbabwe. The series starts in June. Great Teachers Seminars June 12 - 17 Canadian Rockies Great Teachers’ Seminar at Nakoda Lodge in the Kananaskis Region in southern Alberta; June 19 - 23 Pacific Northwest Great Teachers Seminar at Menucha Conference Centre in the Columbia Gorge on the east edge of Portland; B.C. Great Teachers Seminar June 5 - 7 at Naramata Centre. Community college, institute and university educators, representing a wide variety of subject areas, traditionally gather for a week-long intensive seminar which provides an opportunity to learn about and reflect on the current challenges faced by educators in post- secondary institution. Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education June 14 - 18, 1994 in Vancouver This years theme is Learner Centered Teaching - a focus which embraces many current initiatives will see presentations, workshops, experiential learning opportunities, panel discussions and poster sessions to encourage participants to interact while exploring issues and strategies to enhance the quality of teaching and leaning.
