Presents What's the Idea? Brad Muirhead & Farley Johansson I Science Friction Vancouver, BC 25 minutes Victory Square Tuesday July 10th@noon Wednesday July 11th@5pm Festival of Contemporary Dance 2012 July 5 -14, 2012 Brad Muirhead & Science Friction What's the Idea? What's the Idea? is a sonic and physical response to our daily urban orchestration, the sights and sounds that we interact with, contribute to, rejoice in or shut out, whether consciously or not we are a part of a sonic landscape that constantly cycles through the chaos and calm of the city. Composed of 22 musicians and a troupe of dancers, this site-specific work will take over Victory Square to create a unique sonic and visual experience. What's the Idea? features a new acoustic instrumental composition and interactive performance practice. WTI creates composed and improvised music that embraces, echoes, frames, converses with and conflicts with the ambient sounds of a busy city environment. The work utilizes compositional devices ranging from organically changing harmonic textures, rhythmic phasing, melodic collage, minimalism and traffic-jam pointillism to classical and jazz elements in a large open-formation (100 feet on a side) brass quartet and percussion configuration, Additionally, the wild-card device of free-form conversation with specific city-soundscape elements overrides the through-composed music with Individual acts of score-abandoning sounds and movement, and building framed city-block sized natural-reverb chamber. Funding for the development of this work and the rehearsals for this performance made possible through the Canada Council. Friday, July 13, 2012 I 10-12pm Firehall Arts Centre Studio Heidi Strauss I adelheid dance projects Toronto, ON The workshop looks at the direction movement can take: where it starts, how it routes and reroutes itself through the moving body. The relationship of the dancer's body to space and gravity, and to the natural physics of movement when pushed to one's range are a part of the exploration necessary for the dancing body to discover an inevitability of motion. The workshop offers dancers a full physical experience, beginning with floor and travelling material and progressing into longer combinations that allow for an important degree of play. Since 1994, Toronto-based Heidi Strauss has worked as an independent dancer and choreographer. She has toured with Fujiwara Dance Inventions, Tribal Crackling Wind/Peter Chin and Sylvain Emard Danse. For theatre and opera she has choreographed for the Frankfurt Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Volcano Theatre, Tarragon Theatre and Necessary Angel. She has also worked as the rehearsal director for Tribal Crackling Wind, Chartier Danse and O Vertigo.
