@ a Capilano Cem College Informer Vol. XV No. 7 June 9/93 Institution of First Choice « Dedicated to Excellence « Leader in Education Spring Graduation Sends Off First Recipients of Associate Degrees Some 646 students said farewell to Capilano College at graduation ceremo- nies May 27, and among them were the College’s first class of Associate degree recipients. Nineteen students received Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees. The degrees, established by the Minis- try of Advanced Education last sum- mer, acknowledge that a student has completed a rigorous program of 60 university transfer credits. Graham Crockart, chair of the Capilano College Board, expressed the board’s pleasure at seeing the College award the degrees. He told students that success is based on knowledge and “the ability to use that knowledge.” Guest speaker Scott MacLeod, of the Asia Pacific Management and Eco- nomic Geography faculty, likened the students’ time at the College to the “Hotel Capilano.” His twist on the Eagle’s song was in reference to lifelong learning and his heartfelt attachment to the College. “You can check out any time you want,” he said, “‘but you can never leave.” MacLeod first came to Cap ten years ago as an Academic student. He went on to UBC, where he earned his Master’s and is now working on a PhD in geography. His experience at Capilano College encouraged him to guide others in the pursuit of knowl- edge. He has been an instructor here for four years. In addition to the presentation of Associate degrees, the May 27 cer- emony honored students in 49 aca- demic, career and vocational programs. Among the graduates were Michelle Foley, who received the Governor General’s Collegiate Bronze Medal; Johanna Catherine MacMillan, who received the Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal; and Teresa Bango, valedictorian. Foley had previously received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Carlton University, but after 16 years in the workforce, she wanted to switch to a career in computers. She says she investigated two-year college and univer- sity computing programs and decided Cap’s Business Computing Program was the best. Her outstanding achievement in the program has led to a data manage- ment position with ICBC. MacMillan received her award for excellence in the Legal Secretarial Program. She says the program provided thorough preparation for this exacting field. She currently works as a legal secretary for the Department of Justice, focusing on civil litigation, Crown, and Transport Canada issues. Bango was selected for exem- plary academic achievement and community involvement. A former member of the Provincial Ski Team, she graduated from the Business Administration Financial Management Program. She will continue at the College for another term to complete a degree in Administra- tive Studies, a collaborative program of the College and Open University. In addition, 13 graduates received book and pen awards for achieving high academic standing. Thanks for Your Help Many thanks to everyone who completed the Informer surveys distributed last month.
