"He's good at improv, and at feeling out the crowd. He puts a lot of flair into his tours." Though she and her husband know plenty about the history of the home, Vermette says the tours focus on the supernatural. And she's noticed when people leave, most tend to think about time and place a little differently. While chances are good that ghosts will join the tour, it doesn't always happen, says Vermette. The piano does play when there's no one in the parlour, and sometimes visitors feel a strange chill or smell perfume in the air. But other nights, nothing unusual happens. "It's never predictable whether people will have an encounter," Vermette says. Haunted House tours run Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Helmcken House historical site (at the corner of Belleville and Douglas, beside the Royal British Columbia Museum). In honour of Halloween, tours run nightly from October 27 to 31. Reservations are recommended. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, $6 for kids and $25 for families. All prices include GST. Call 361-0021 for information and reservations. SOUL FOOD A finalfarewell for thosephathorns.9pm.$4. BILLJOHNSON Ohbaby,it's the blues.9pm-midnight. Nocover. But not long after their arrival, the parlour piano started playing on its own. "We basically kept it to ourselves for the first couple of years," Cathy Vermette laughs. "We didn't know the house was really haunted." Reassurance came for the operators of Stychen Tyme Historical Interpretation when visitors began sharing their ghost stories about the home. After five years of logging the spooky stories, the Vermettes started guiding weekend haunted house tours in October, 2000. The ghostly walks are still a hit among those who enjoy a good scare. Dressed in early Victorian garb, Marc Vermette guides hour-long tours through the rooms of the house-including the attic. While the goal, naturally, is to tell scary tales, he does gear each tour to the group he's leading.
