csi Informer REARS a eG a eM GW TS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Diane Blaney Welcome Back!! It wasn’t much of a summer weather wise and I note that now that we are back to the classroom, the weather has changed for the better but from your professional development viewpoint, I hope it was a productive, successful and stimulating time. Your new committee will be meeting soon to begin plans for the next year. This years committee has returning Anette Lorek, and new members Anne Watson, Jolene Bordewick, and Jan Gibbs. We are short two representatives from the Academic area - one to be appointed by the DAC and one elected from the CCFA. So if you are interested in working on the shape of Professional Development at Capilano College in the next year - please get involved. The tenure on the Committee is for two years. The composition of the committee is balanced amongst the three divisions. I will complete the second year of my two year appointment as Chair. May PD Days Last May the Professional Development Committee sponsored a series of workshop and seminar sessions over a four-day period. The response from faculty members was very positive. Over 100 people participated to varying degrees. The Centre for Professional and Curriculum Development contributed financially to this event and an invitation was issued to our fellow collegues throughout the province in colleges and other institutes to join us. Several representatives attended and found our sessions worthwhile to them. Feedback sheets have been circulated to all attendees. Please take some time to provide us with positive criticism so that we can improve next year. If you have any suggestions about topics that would be of interest to a group of your colleagues, or a suggestion for a theme or keynote speaker, please contact one of the members of your Professional Development Committee. Fall Grant Applications Deadline October 15, 1993 Grants are available to full- and part-time faculty who: >» have a minimum of two years service; > are working a four section minimum in year of request; » have received no grant from Committee past twelve months. Grants up to a maximum of $1,000 are available for research, | attendance at conferences and individual professional development activities which fall outside the regular articulation process. Grants are awarded through an adjudication process of the Faculty Development Committee two times a year: fall and spring. It is intended that the available funds be spread amongst as many people 8 as possible, therefore, the Committee can rarely allocate more than partial funds to any distant travel request. Applications are evaluated against the following criteria: » degree of personal professional growth to the individual; > contribution to the discipline/career/vocational/area; > contribution to the College’s image; > contribution to classroom effectiveness. Applications for this adjudication round, which may included reimbursement for conferences already attended, should be sent to the Faculty Development Committee, attention Diane Blaney. Instructional Skills Workshop Two Instructional Skills Workshop were held - one early in May as part of our May Days offerings and one as recently as the week before the commencement of classes. A total of eleven keen participants from the Career and Academic Divisions - Master teacher and beginning instructor alike - exchanged ideas and explored new teaching techniques. The enthusiastic groups will be sharing their techniques with students and colleagues this fall. The next workshop is planned for the first week in January. Call me at 2364 for additional information or to register. Space is limited to six participants. There is no cost to participate. Exchange Opportunity Are you interested in attempting an exchange with another instructor in New Zealand. The President of Manatu Polytechnical in New Zealand is very keen to facilitate such an arrangement. Last year two faculty members from the Polytech indicated an interest in participating but there were no responses to my call from the corresponding functional areas here at Capilano. They are open to hearing from anyone who might be interested in participating and have asked us to initiate the process this year. Please call me if you would like more information about the location and curriculum covered by this institution. Computing at Capilano College At our May PD Days sessions, the most popular sessions featured computer communicating. Many of us have access capability but not the know-how to take advantage of it - many others need basic instruction - while others need some hand-holding while we get our feet wet. The Infotec Department has two course in which faculty who want to do more "tele-communicating" may be interested. INFO 166 - Applied Telecommunications and INFO-179 - Internet and Online Skills. Access to a computer with a Modem is required. Contact the Infotec Department for more details. && printed on recycled paper
